A WCW legend hopes to be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame. He wrestled in just one match for the company.
Buff Bagwell got his big break in WCW, and his run started on the right note as he was named the Rookie of the Year in 1991. During his tenure in World Championship Wrestling, he won multiple titles and was even a member of the NWO at one point. Following the closure of WCW, he wrestled one televised match on WWE RAW, where he challenged Booker T for the WCW World Heavyweight Championship.
Sadly, his promising career was plagued by addiction troubles. However, he has mended his ways, thanks to help from DDP, whom he has credited for turning his life around.
Buff Bagwell said on his YouTube channel that he would love to work out a Legends deal with WWE or be involved with the promotion in some way.
“I’d love to have some kind of Legend deal,” he said. “Or helping the boys, or helping the school out. Some part of being under that WWE umbrella. I’d love to be a part of that.”
Bagwell also believes that his redemption will lead him to a Hall of Fame induction.
“The 20 years I blew, I believe will be corrected before I die. I really believe I make the resume part of it. But there’s more to the Hall of Fame than that. You gotta be a good person and show that you’re a good human being, and I’m on that right path now. I just hope and pray that I will [get there].” [H/T to 411Mania]
JBL commented on Buff Bagwell's only televised WWE match
Buff Bagwell made his WWE debut on the July 2, 2001, episode of RAW is War, when he faced Booker T for the WCW World Heavyweight Championship. Both men competed in a short match before Stone Cold Steve Austin and Kurt Angle interrupted and attacked Booker, causing a DQ. This match received a lot of criticism from the fans and was also the reason Vince McMahon canceled his plans to broadcast Nitro alongside RAW.
On a recent edition of What Were They Thinking? on Backstage Pass, JBL said that most of the WWE roster didn't know Buff Bagwell, but they knew Booker T and were rooting for him. However, the match itself was so bad.
"We all knew Booker pretty well. You know, Bagwell had been in WCW pretty much predominantly in his career. A lot of guys that weren't [in] WCW didn't know Marcus. We all knew Booker. Most of us had worked with him at one stage or another. A lot of us had. And, you know, I broke in with Booker. So, we love Booker and we're sitting there rooting for him. And that match was just so freaking bad."
It will be interesting to see if Buff Bagwell gets his redemption story and works with the Stamford-based promotion again.
