Cody Rhodes not winning the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship at WrestleMania in 2023 was a lousy move by creative, according to a large section of the very vocal fanbase.
It does not have to be this way, but aside from his feud with Brock Lesnar that was saved by the climactic showdown between the two at SummerSlam, Rhodes has been floundering on the flagship show.
The American Nightmare is still massively over, as evident by the rapturous reaction from the live crowd. However, his storylines since his attempt to "finish the story" at the Show of Shows have a hit-or-miss nature to it. At Night of Champions earlier this year, Cody Rhodes wrestled Brock Lesnar with an arm cast. Several fans have reacted to the creative team's decision to pull a similar angle after the last Saudi show.
Priest told The American Nightmare prior to the assault, "At this point, your story's gotta be that you failed." With him holding the MITB contract, the Judgment Day star remains a focal point in the world title picture, irrespective of Cody Rhodes, as we head into a crucial set of months ahead.
