WWE Hall of Famer The Undertaker often shares his views on the current landscape of pro wrestling. Recently, Dutch Mantell disagreed with The Deadman's opinion of Cody Rhodes as a heel and explained why The American Nightmare could never do that.
Cody Rhodes emerged as the company's biggest babyface in years when he returned to the Stamford-based promotion after a gruesome injury in January 2023. In the following months, he solidified himself as the most beloved star on the roster and eventually dethroned Roman Reigns as Undisputed WWE Universal Champion at WrestleMania XL.
On Story Time with Dutch Mantell, the veteran reacted to The Undertaker's claim about Cody Rhodes finding success if he were to turn heel. Mantell said The American Nightmare could not play a villainous character in the long run following his rise to the top.
"I don't see him as a heel. I really don't, because if you watch Cody [Rhodes] go into the ring, he's always shaking the hands of all those kids. It's hard to take a guy like that and make him a wholesale heel because it doesn't work. Plus, we gotta throw the merchandise in there. He's the number one merchandise seller, and he and they're not going to jeopardize that just for the sake of selling a few tickets and a few pay-per-views," Mantell said.
Mantell added that Rhodes was thriving as a face and the company shouldn't look to change his character anytime soon.
"I believe like he is, if you have success, don't try to unsuccess yourself right off the bat. Let him have his run, and then something happens, and if you really think, and he may be a heel in one program, and that was it. I would get rid of it." (From 00:55 onwards)
WWE Hall of Famer The Undertaker helped Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania XL
Earlier this year, Cody Rhodes made history when he ended Roman Reigns' legendary run as the Undisputed WWE Universal Champion at The Showcase of the Immortals in Philadelphia. However, Rhodes didn't do it alone.
During the title match, many notable WWE names appeared and contributed to The American Nightmare's victory. Jey Uso, John Cena, and Seth Rollins all tried to help Rhodes but were neutralized by The Bloodline.
In the match's final moments, WWE Hall of Famer The Undertaker appeared and chokeslammed The Rock. This allowed Cody Rhodes to hit Roman Reigns with his finisher and end the historic reign.
