Harvey Wippleman was one of WWE's most well-known managers in the 1990s. In an exclusive interview, the 58-year-old opened up about one of his most memorable moments in the wrestling business.
Before joining WWE in 1991, Wippleman made his name in Memphis as Downtown Bruno in the 1980s. On one occasion, Memphis legend Jerry Lawler was supposed to face Nick Bockwinkel in a main event in Indiana. However, Bockwinkel could not attend the show due to a snowstorm in Minnesota.
Speaking to Sportskeeda Wrestling Senior Editor Bill Apter, Wippleman recalled how fans were desperate for him to replace Bockwinkel:
"They had Buddy Landel come out and attack Lawler and put him down and [said], 'You Evansville losers,' blah, blah, blah. [Announcer] Randy Hales came back out again, 'Okay, who would you like to see Jerry The King Lawler wrestle?' [Fans chanted] 'Bruno! Bruno!' They didn't want Buddy Landel. They wanted to see Lawler beat my a**, so me and him had a damn match. I loved it because he let me call it in the ring." [4:53 – 5:20]

What happened in the Jerry Lawler vs. Harvey Wippleman match
Although he wrestled sporadically, Harvey Wippleman was best known for his managerial abilities. Jerry Lawler, by contrast, was widely viewed as one of the most talented wrestlers of his generation.
Looking back, Wippleman liked facing Lawler and wishes he could see the match again:
"I poked him in the eye, did something on the top rope like I was gonna dive on him. He'd come up, slam me off the top rope, give me the fist drop, and one, two, three. I wish that match was on tape somehow because I enjoyed that very much." [5:58 – 6:13]
Wippleman also revealed what he told The Rock after catching up with his long-time friend before WrestleMania XL.
