The 16-time world champion's last match was at Crown Jewel last year, where he was defeated by Solo Sikoa in a singles match. He made a surprise return at WrestleMania XL Night 2 during Cody Rhodes' match against Roman Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship, where he attacked The Bloodline.

At Money in the Bank, Trish Stratus introduced John Cena and he left the entire wrestling world in shock after he stated that he came out to announce his retirement from WWE. He then went on to say that he'll compete at the Royal Rumble and Elimination Chamber, and that WrestleMania 41 in Las Vegas will be his last time wrestling at The Grandest Stage of Them All.
