A former WWE Superstar was happy that Drew McIntyre didn't suffer one of the worst injuries ever during his match against CM Punk. Stevie Richards thought that things could have gone south after Punk's botched toolbox shot at McIntyre, who was busted open because of it.

The rivalry between The Scottish Warrior and The Second City Saint was settled once and for all at WWE Bad Blood inside Hell in a Cell. After a bloody and hellacious fight, Punk came out on top and beat McIntyre inside the structure.

On the latest episode of The Stevie Richards Show, Richards discussed the botch that cut open McIntyre's head. It was not a planned injury, so many were worried backstage after it happened. The longtime wrestling veteran was just happy that the former World Heavyweight Champion didn't get hit in the face.

"Punk, as he's leaned over, is going to throw the toolbox up in Drew. Now, thank God he didn't hit him in the face. That would have been bad like a Joey Mercury type of split open type thing," Richards said. [1:06 - 1:22]

For those unaware, Joey Mercury suffered a devastating facial injury at WWE Armaggedon 2006. A ladder struck Mercury in the face and it caused him to bleed profusely. He was immediately taken out of the match and rushed to the hospital where he was diagnosed with a broken nose and orbital bone.

Luckily for Drew McIntyre, he did not suffer any major injuries but had to get 16 stitches to close the big gash on his head.

Bret Hart reacts to tribute from Drew McIntyre and CM Punk from their Hell in a Cell match

Some fans might not have noticed it, but Drew McIntyre and CM Punk paid tribute to Bret Hart and Stone Cold Steve Austin at Bad Blood. At one point in the match, Punk put McIntyre in a Sharpshooter, with The Scottish Warrior's face draped in blood.

It was a call back to Hart putting the Sharpshooter on Austin at WrestleMania 13, which has been one of the most iconic images in WWE history. Hart told The Wrestling Classic that he appreciated the gesture by the two stars, but his match with Stone Cold was still better.

"I always take those as a sort of a nod of respect, so I like it and appreciate it. But it still wasn't as good as my Austin match," Hart said. [7:54 - 8:05]

Both Drew McIntyre and CM Punk have taken some time off to heal from their injuries, so it will be interesting to see what's next for the former WWE Champions once they return.
