Despite Gunther being one of the most protected names on the WWE roster, a veteran believes his booking has been less than ideal. The veteran recently talked about his match at the Crown Jewel Premium Live Event, where he faced Cody Rhodes for the Crown Jewel Championship and lost.

The Ring General is arguably the most dominant in-ring wrestler at the moment, with almost always punishing his opponents in a fight. However, his match against The American Nightmare saw him struggle, ultimately losing. Despite that, Gunther was seen teasing a character change after he showed respect for Cody.

On Sportskeeda's Writing with Russo, Vince Russo said that it was a bad idea to have Gunther lose cleanly at Crown Jewel. When asked about whether The Ring General could have been protected better, he said:

"Absolutely. 1000 percent. Ya, I mean again, the booking is always suspect to me, and no matter what I say and man with everything I say, I give an explanation. And you know, it's always the bitter stuff, this and that, it's like okay. Whatever. All I know is that if I am booking, I am not beating Gunther clean." [3:40 onwards]

Another veteran liked the WWE star's subtle booking

While Vince Russo may not agree with the WWE creative department's choices regarding Gunther, veteran journalist Bill Apter was pleased with how his character change is being teased.

On Sportskeeda's The Wrestling Time Machine, Apter talked about how it was a classy move to have Gunther respect his fight against Cody Rhodes. He stated:

"The way that they moved this on now is that Gunther is complimenting Cody Rhodes, he is telling Cody it's not finished. But on Monday Night RAW recently, he said to Ludwig Kaiser who was putting Cody down verbally. He said don't say anything bad about Cody. He was the better man that night, I am not done with him. But he won fairly, and he respected him. So, very classy." [From 07:12 onwards]
