What’s the story?
New Japan Pro Wrestling superstar Kota Ibushi recently spoke with Tokyo Sports in Japan to discuss a host of topics regarding the on-going scenario with the Bullet Club, his current role in New Japan Pro Wrestling, Cody Rhodes and much more.
In case you didn’t know…
Despite performing as a freelancer in the world of Professional Wrestling, former three-time IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Champion Kota Ibushi has been alternatively playing a seemingly vital role in NJPW and in the on-going dissension storyline between The Golden Lovers and The Bullet Club.
Ibushi, who prior to his NJPW return in 2016 also competed under the WWE banner, made his eventual return to Japan as Tiger Mask W, before NJPW announced that Ibushi’s participation in the 2017 G1 Climax (this time under Ibushi’s real name).
Earlier in the year, Kota Ibushi also reunited with Kenny Omega at The New Beginning at Sapporo 2018 after saving Kenny, who was involved in an altercation with other Bullet Club members Cody and Hangman Page.
The heart of the matter
As noted, during the past few months, Kota Ibushi has become entangled into the on-going Bullet Club ‘Civil War’ storyline, as he and his tag team partner Kenny Omega have been battling the likes of Cody Rhodes, Marty Scurll, and The Young Bucks in NJPW for the past several months.
While speaking with Tokyo Sports, Ibushi finally opened up about his thoughts regarding this infighting within the BC, as the former WWE CWC competitor noted that he has no idea why the Bullet Club have been fighting against one another, because it definitely doesn’t interest Ibushi at all. “I don’t know why the Bullet Club members have to fight each other. I want it to end. It doesn’t interest me at all, I just don’t want to be caught up in it anymore.”
In addition, Ibushi also went onto say that he does not want to bring backstage drama into the ring and instead wants to focus on the in-ring competitiveness, in order to develop the on-going stories.
“I want to wrestle in the ring and have the stories develop and amaze people there and there alone. Even as I tag (in the Golden Lovers) I want to make a mark, show results on my own”
Furthermore, Ibushi also commented on his newest adversary, who has turned into one of his biggest on-screen rivals in NJPW, the man who refers himself as the self-proclaimed leader of the Bullet Club, Cody Rhodes.
“I liked my match with Cody (at Wrestle Kingdom). I like him as a wrestler; to just have a normal match, I’m looking forward to it. Win or lose, I want this to be the end of all this, put it behind us and move on.”- Ibushi on Cody Rhodes.
What’s next?
Kota Ibushi will square-off against Cody Rhodes in a Wrestle Kingdom 12 rematch, this Thursday at NJPW: Wrestling Dontaku.
Author’s take
The Bullet Club-Golden Lovers storyline is definitely one of the most interesting storylines in the world of Professional Wrestling today and personally, I’m excited to see how all of this eventually unfolds and which superstar claims the leadership of the Bullet Club by the end of it.
