On this day in 1997, the most controversial moment in WWF history occured when then European Champion Shawn Michaels faced the WWF Champion Bret Hart for his title in Canada at Survivor Series. Bret Hart, who had already signed with WCW, was double-crossed in the finish of the match by owner Vince McMahon.

McMahon feared that Bret would’ve taken the Title to WCW if he retained just like Madusa. Bret spit in McMahon’s face after the match was over.
