WWE may have had their work cut out for them when they decided to redo the championship match between Roman Reigns and Brock Lesnar at this year's edition of WrestleMania, but the idea isn't as bizarre as you might think. In fact, with Lesnar seemingly done with the company after Mania and WWE slowly turning the tables with Reigns, it's working quite well.
With that being said, the decision to make either AJ Styles versus Shinsuke Nakamura or the mixed tag team match between Angle, Rousey, Triple H and Stephanie McMahon seems to have more to do with the company's lack of faith in Reigns and nothing to do with downplaying one of their biggest stars on the way out.
Think about it! WWE has been trying for months to put Reigns in a main event role again, but seem to fail each time due to one reason or another. Interestingly enough, by having Reigns versus Lesnar take a backseat to another match at WrestleMania, the company could actually end up getting a positive reaction out of it before everything is said and done.
Not only is that result possible due to the fact that Reigns is capable of having a blockbuster match every time he steps into the ring, but also because it can allow Reigns to have his moment in the spotlight without making it the headline of the entire show. That way, WWE fans can't whine about him being given the main event once again and WWE can still have their match!
New Champs in WWE! More RIGHT HERE
WWE even did the same thing with The Universal Title at WrestleMania 33, where they had Lesnar fight Goldberg for the title in a match that didn't last over ten minutes and wasn't even the main event match of the evening. In the end, Lesnar came out looking like a powerful bad ass, while Goldberg was able to quickly leave the company once again.
With that being said, the storyline achieved its intended purpose of making Lesnar look strong after WrestleMania and allowed for Reigns versus The Undertaker to be the actual main event match that year. This year, however, it appears Roman Reigns will have to take the backseat to another match in order to pull this off without incident.
Of course there are still the issues of Reigns' promo cutting skills, his lack of charisma and his patented four moves of doom that he puts on display every single night he competes, buts its hard not to argue that WWE has been hiding a lot of The Big Dog's faults by making Lesnar out to be the villain.
Another thing that could play into the what match ends up being the main event is how much publicity the company would get if they put the mixed tag team match on last. Not only would that give WWE a boatload of mainstream media attention heading into the big event, it would also allow one of their Hall Of Famers to shine as well.
It would also be the first time a woman has participated in a main event match at WrestleMania, which will be an interesting stat for both WWE and Rousey's career as a whole. As for Shinsuke Nakamura versus AJ Styles being the main event, that would probably be a popular choice for a main event match and would be a dream scenario of sorts.
If this actually works or not remains to be seen, but by making another match the main event of WrestleMania 34, it gives WWE a chance to silence some of the critics and hide away some of Reign's weakness in the process. If nothing else, it's almost a fail-proof idea to finally elevate Reigns into the upper echelon of WWE.
