It has been almost a quarter of a century since he made his in-ring debut, but even today, Triple H is one of the cornerstones of the WWE. In a long and illustrious career, The Game has accomplished almost every single accolade there is in the business.
Triple H is a 14 time World Champion, a 5 time Intercontinental Champion, a two time Royal Rumble winner, the 1996 King Of The Ring Winner, and a three time Slammy award winner.
The Game has been an integral part of the WWE, and has given fans memories that will last a lifetime. He has been in feuds with almost every major Superstar of the industry, including The Undertaker, Shawn Michaels, The Rock, Kane, Randy Orton, Brock Lesnar, and Batista .
But the last two years have shown the world a different Triple H - a Triple H who has been struck by injuries, a Triple H who now struggles to move in the ring. And last year, his monumental "Last Time Ever" bout with the iconic Undertaker drew criticism for both the Superstars’ inability to move fluidly in the ring, and their performances were lacklustre, and Crown Jewel only proved that age has indeed caught up with The Game.
But then, for all the arguments against the Cerebral Assassin, we need to understand that the WWE needs a man like Triple H now, more than ever. When Triple H was in his prime, in the late 1990s and the early 2000s, he had a rare ensemble of stars alongside him who could carry the business effortlessly on their shoulders.
Nobody could electrify the crowd like The Rock, nobody could deliver show-stopping performances like Shawn Michaels, nobody managed to have an aura around him like The Undertaker, and nobody was a bigger star than Stone Cold Steve Austin.
But then, as the decades rolled by, slowly one after another, the legends started moving away. The Rock moved away to the greener pastures of Hollywood, reducing himself to sporadic appearances, Stone Cold suffered a critical neck injury that put a premature end to his in-ring career in 2003, Shawn Michaels walked away from the ring in 2010 after a classic match against The Undertaker at WrestleMania XXVI, and Kane has now assumed the role of a mayor, and has reduced his in-ring appearances drastically.
Triple H, along with the Undertaker, is the last of his breed. But then, even the ones who are left may not carry on for long. The Undertaker is just a pale shadow of his former self and is in the twilight of his career, it is highly unlikely that Goldberg will carry on for long after Saudi Arabia. John Cena is also busy with Hollywood, and Batista is done with his career.
And that is exactly why, even though he is nearly 50 years old, even though all the years of battle have finally started taking its toll on his body, the WWE needs Triple H today more than ever.
The crowds still flock to the stadium to see him in action, he can still cut classic promos, and most importantly, he has the star power that can attract attention.
While we might think that Triple H is nearing the end of his ‘Hall Of Fame’ career, it is important to understand that the WWE still looks to him for pushing up ticket sales, and he is still very much a part of the WWE's creative plans. And, as fans, we can still expect some savage moments from The Game, as the WWE needs him now, more than they ever did before.
