After repeatedly failing to capture the WWE Championship from AJ Styles, Shinsuke Nakamura finally won championship gold at Extreme Rules after laying out Jeff Hardy with a low-blow and Kinshasa. Nakamura's heel-turn at Wrestlemania 34 was a revelation and has elevated his character work to new heights.

Now that he has won the United States Championship, it is highly unlikely he will lose it anytime soon, as the WWE has portrayed him to be a heel who will do absolutely anything to win. Nakamura also has history on his side, because the WWE loves having a foreign heel carry the United States Championship (just look at Rusev a few years ago) and Nakamura fits the mold perfectly. Nakamura is just too good to have his reign cut short, having just won the belt at Extreme Rules a fortnight ago.
