Nicole has an interesting history with NXT.

Nicole Matthews was another of the alternates for last year's tournament. A Shimmer mainstay, Matthews has also worked opposite no less than three NXT Women's Champions. In late 2016, she appeared in a squash match against then-champion Asuka. On the independent scene, she's worked opposite former champion Ember Moon (then known as Athena) and current champion Shayna Baszler.

With over a decade in the ring, Matthews would serve as a reliable hand for the newer and less-experienced talent in the tournament to work with.
