Over the course of August and September 2018, R-Truth first claimed that he would go after Shinsuke Nakamura's United States title and become number one contender by pinning Carmella.

He would then confront her backstage after SummerSlam and try to get a matchup with her.
In the following weeks, he would even encounter Maryse and mistake her for Carmella. He finally did get her ringside to corner him but the series of sketches between the two were nothing short of comedy gold.
It reminded people after a long time just how funny R-Truth really is.
