After returning to WWE in 2016, Shane McMahon was announced as the Commissioner of SmackDown during the 2016 WWE Brand Extension. One of Shane O'Mac's first rulings as SmackDown Commissioner was to announce that Daniel Bryan would be SmackDown's new General Manager.

Daniel Bryan was forced into an in-ring retirement in February 2016 due to a series of concussion-related injuries. Fast forward two years and the SmackDown General Manager was miraculously medically cleared to compete inside a WWE ring once again. As part of an ongoing storyline on SmackDown, the Commissioner and General Manager of the blue brand would team up to face two SmackDown superstars in Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn at WrestleMania.

Owens and Zayn feuded with Shane McMahon and eventually attacked both Shane O'Mac and Daniel Bryan during episodes of SmackDown.

This led to Daniel Bryan making his first in-ring appearance in close to 3 years at the SuperDome during WrestleMania 34 in New Orleans. Ironically, this was the location of Daniel Bryan's greatest victory four years prior at WrestleMania XXX when he defeated Triple H, Randy Orton and Batista in the same night to become the WWE World Heavyweight Champion.

The match itself lasted over 15 minutes and mainly served as a celebration of Daniel Bryan's miraculous return to in-ring competition - something which was previously thought of as an impossibility. Despite being attacked from behind by Owens and Zayn to begin the match, Shane McMahon and Daniel Bryan were able to overcome their rivals and win the match after Daniel Bryan forced Sami Zayn to submit to the YES! Lock.
