Rey Mysterio is one of the longest-performing stars in WWE today and has already accomplished many things. It's no secret that he might be close to retiring from in-ring competition, and he may have already subtly shown signs that it could happen soon.
Many are familiar with Rey Mysterio whether they are wrestling fans or not. The Hall of Famer began wrestling in 1989, joined WCW in 1996, and then WWE in 2002. Apart from a brief stint away from the company, the star has called WWE his home for the better part of the last 20 years. He captured fans' imagination through his exciting in-ring and high-flying skills, but his enticing character has surely helped him become a memorable name. He is best known for his flashy and colorful gear, especially his luchador mask. Interestingly, he isn't as secretive about his unmasked face as before.
A luchador mask is an important aspect of their career and identity as it holds a lot of importance in their culture. Stella Kae of Cabra Sports even previously stated that the masks are so sacred that losing them could signify losing themselves, which for some wrestlers also means the end of their career or retirement.

There have been more instances of the RAW star posting himself unmasked on social media after being inducted into the 2023 Hall of Fame. This could be his subtle way of slowly letting fans into his personal life and letting them know who he is without the mask, as he might no longer need it soon.
Although Rey Mysterio wrestled unmasked in WCW, it was mainly for storyline purposes and something that Mysterio has expressed disappointment with. This time around, he is unmasking himself on his own accord.
When does Rey Mysterio plan on retiring from wrestling?
The Latino World Order member has openly talked about when he plans to retire from wrestling for a while now, and it mainly concerns his health and whether he still enjoys the sport.
In an October 2020 interview with Ariel Helwani, Rey Mysterio expressed that his main goal was to share the ring with his son Dominik Mysterio and convert his fans into fans of his son. Four years later, the father and son duo has shared the ring several times as teammates and enemies, with Dom recently gaining a win from his father in a singles match. Also, the former North American Champion has gained many fans after turning heel in 2022.
In May 2024, he expressed that he would retire when he no longer feels excited about performing. In June, the 49-year-old said that he previously thought about retiring by 50, but his body still felt great. However, he monitors his body closely.
It remains to be seen when Rey Mysterio will officially hang up the wrestling boots.
