What’s the story?
It has been reported by pwinsider.com that Adam Cole’s contract with Ring Of Honor has expired as of May 1st, 2017 and he is free to work wherever he wants.
The background
Adam Cole has been wrestling for around ten years and has become one of the biggest stars on the independent circuit. He is currently a member of the Bullet Club and is the only man to ever hold the ROH World Heavyweight Championship three times, although he recently dropped the title to Christopher Daniels at the ROH 15th Anniversary Show on March 10th.
New Champs in WWE! More RIGHT HERE
However, there has been a lot of speculation over the past few months that Cole could be on his way to WWE. Just last week, he stated in an interview with ESPN that if he was to join the company, he would like to begin in NXT.
"I would want to [start in NXT] because, first of all, I'm a fan of NXT…I think the brand is cool. I think the Takeover shows are awesome. I think the fans are great. I love the roster of guys. I think it's something that's going to be looked at as a very special time in pro wrestling, so I want to be a part of it. Secondly, of course in a perfect world if I went to NXT, I wouldn't want to be there forever; but I like the idea of going there and performing there and getting accustomed to the WWE audience and them getting accustomed to me and then eventually making the move to Raw or Smackdown.”
The heart of the matter
The news of Cole’s ROH contract expiring does open up a host of possibilities for the former ROH Champion, although it does not necessarily mean he is WWE bound. He may still work with Ring of Honor but, as a free agent, he can work with whatever company he chooses without restriction.
What’s next?
Cole’s future is unclear although there is a lot of speculation that he could become the next independent pro-wrestling star to join the NXT brand.
Author’s take
I would love to see Adam Cole in WWE although there is still a lot left for him to accomplish away from the company, such as establishing himself as a star in New Japan Pro Wrestling.
However, at 27 years old, he is approaching the prime of his career and it would be a great time for him to join the biggest wrestling company in the world. I think Cole would fit in well with the WWE’s style and if he was to join NXT first, he would benefit that brand and help replace the stars they recently lost to WWE’s main roster, such as Samoa Joe and Shinsuke Nakamura.
One thing is for sure, everyone is eagerly anticipating Adam Cole’s next move. But wherever he decides to go, he looks set to have a very bright future in the pro wrestling industry.
