It looks like Mercedes Mone's stellar post-WWE run in Japan has been cut short for the time being, as she reportedly suffered a significant injury. The woman formerly known as Sasha Banks may have broken her ankle during her match against Willow Nightingale at the NJPW Resurgence pay-per-view.

Mercedes wrestled multiple matches at the show as the first-ever NJPW Strong Women's Champion was crowned. The CEO defeated Stephanie Vaquer before facing Willow Nightingale for the title in the main event. She lost to the AEW star but had to be carried to the back due to her injury.

The report on Mone's ankle being broken comes from PWInsider. While not known precisely where she got the injury, the former WWE Superstar took several huge bumps during the match. She sold a lot for Nightingale, who looked surprised she won the match.

The timing of the injury couldn't be worse, as Mercedes Mone has been on an incredible run since she debuted in NJPW at Wrestle Kingdom. She won the IWGP Women's Championship from Kairi and lost it to Mayu Iwatani 64 days later. The CEO has big plans outside of WWE.

Mercedes Mone sent a message to WWE and NJPW fans

Following the events that transpired at NJPW Resurgence, the five-time WWE RAW Women's Champion took to Twitter to update her fans. While not confirming what her injury is, Mercedes stated she will be back better than ever:

"WRESTLING!!!! Phew, not how I dreamed for tonight to go. I’m so sorry and I love you guys so much. I’m gonna heal and be back better than ever," tweeted Mercedes Mone.

It remains to be seen how long she will be out and what she will do once she is able to return to the ring. The future still seems bright for the Mandalorian star, albeit slightly delayed.

Sportskeeda Wrestling wishes Mercedes Mone a speedy recovery, and hopefully, she will be back to her best soon.
