WWE is close to wrapping up another successful year, which saw Cody Rhodes finally capture the company's top championship. Amid popularity concerns, the fighting champion continues to move forward with marquee matches on the horizon. However, backstage sources have just provided an unfortunate update on what's in the works and which WWE Superstars may benefit besides Rhodes.
The American Nightmare dethroned Roman Reigns at WrestleMania XL and has continued to be a top star in the company, hitting merchandise records and other accolades. There have been some concerns over Cody's character and overall popularity, but the Undisputed Champion still seems to be a massive draw. The 39-year-old is expected to headline WrestleMania 41 in some fashion.
Rumors from recent happenings have Cody potentially facing Reigns, CM Punk, John Cena, or The Rock on The Grandest Stage of Them All. With the son of Dusty Rhodes likely entering WrestleMania Vegas as champion, there has been speculation on Cody retaining and going on to have a lengthy reign like Roman. However, a new report from WrestleVotes on SK Wrestling's Backstage Pass indicates that Rhodes dropping the strap at 'Mania could be in the plans.
New Champs in WWE! More RIGHT HERE
It was noted that there will be a new Undisputed WWE Champion crowned at some point in 2025, barring any significant creative changes. There was no clear idea of when or where Cody might be defeated or which superstar would get the nod from Triple H and other officials.
Sources did not elaborate on Cody's match or matches in Las Vegas, but it was also reported that WWE wants Punk booked in one of the title matches at WrestleMania. Furthermore, officials are once again very high-up on Drew McIntyre, and they are looking at 2025 as the year The Scottish Warrior is finally solidified as a top main eventer, which some would argue has already happened. McIntyre is set to be a big part of The Road to WrestleMania 42.
Cody Rhodes potentially headed to WWE RAW
Cody Rhodes has been away since the attack by Kevin Owens at WWE SNME two weeks ago. The Undisputed Champion is advertised for the final SmackDown of 2024 on Friday but has not been officially announced.
The American Nightmare is also advertised to face KO in a Steel Cage match on the annual post-Christmas live event tour. He is then set to appear on the RAW Netflix premiere on January 6, as most of the top names are, but now there's speculation on Cody going to the red brand for good as he's been added to the third RAW Netflix episode on January 20 in Dallas. He is not currently listed for the second episode on July 13 in San Jose.
WWE has not announced Cody's next challenger. However, all signs point to a third televised title match with Owens, perhaps at SNME on January 25 in San Antonio.
