Major last-minute changes took place on this week's WWE SmackDown - Reports

The January 3, 2025 and first three-hour episode of WWE SmackDown saw several superstars preparing for new storylines. A new backstage note seemingly revealed that a few last-minute changes were made to the kickoff segment of this week's Friday night show.

Cody Rhodes opened the show with a promo before being interrupted by Drew McIntyre. Fans assumed that the Scottish star was there to attack The American Nightmare, but he hugged the champion instead.

Then, The Scottish Warrior offered to help Rhodes, but the latter refused. After a back-and-forth heated exchange on the microphone, McIntyre exited the ring and warned the 39-year-old star to watch his back.

This distraction allowed Kevin Owens to attack Rhodes from behind, triggering a brawl. Officials and security guards eventually had to intervene to separate the two men. However, before executing this version of the segment, WWE had planned something else.

According to PWInsider, originally this segment involved a KO promo that would have drawn in Drew McIntyre and The American Nightmare. The creative team extensively debated the most effective approach for all parties involved, ultimately opting for the version that aired.

The report also noted that at one point, there were also discussions including Jey Uso, but WWE eventually decided on a different direction. Shawn Daivari served as the producer for this segment.

Veteran comments on how WWE should have booked the opening segment on SmackDown

Wrestling veteran Vince Russo reflected on the segment featuring Cody Rhodes, Drew McIntyre, and Kevin Owens. He discussed this on an episode of BroDown on Backstage Pass.

Vince Russo questioned why the WWE creative team did not immediately shift its focus to The American Nightmare's pursuit of The Prizefighter, arguing that this approach would have created more compelling television.

"You open up the show, you got the Cody Rhodes in ring, then here comes Drew and Cody is attacked from behind by Owens. Yeah, why isn't Cody hunting down Owens the entire show?"

It remains to be seen whether Rhodes will retain his title against KO in the Ladder Match at the upcoming Royal Rumble Premium Live Event.
