Shane McMahon has been linked to AEW over the past few months, and a photo of his meeting with Tony Khan recently leaked on social media. However, a recent report has revealed the possible reason behind the meeting between The Prodigal Son and the Jacksonville-based promotion's CEO.

An image showing Khan and McMahon in the same room has gone viral on social media, and many are anticipating a potential partnership. However, nothing has been set in stone.

Dave Meltzer shared on the latest episode of Wrestling Observer Radio that McMahon was trying to get back into WWE but the company was not interested in The Prodigal Son. The veteran journalist wondered whether Shane met Khan to persuade the minds of the Stamford-based promotion's top brass.

"With Shane, you don't know. I mean, I know Shane McMahon has looked to get back in WWE. I know that people in charge of WWE have no interest in him. Could that change with the idea that he would be willing to AEW? Maybe, maybe not. Would he really be willing to go to AEW? I don't know where he's mind is," Meltzer said.

Shane McMahon breaks silence regarding AEW links

In a statement via WWE Hall of Famer Bubba Ray Dudley on Busted Open Radio, Shane McMahon confirmed his meeting with Tony Khan. The former European Champion claimed that he connected with Khan through a mutual friend, and the duo had a fruitful discussion regarding their ''shared love for the business,'' among other things.

Shane also revealed that he congratulated Tony on the recent fifth anniversary of the Jacksonville-based company.

"Tony and I were connected through a mutual friend, and we had a great meeting. We talked about many things, but mostly about our shared love for the business and the rewards and challenges of working with family. I congratulated him on the five-year anniversary of AEW and look forward to see how he evolves the business moving forward," he said. [H/T: Inside the Ropes]
