Alberto Del Rio's second stint with WWE ended in 2016 after both parties mutually agreed to his release. Since then, Del Rio has been wrestling on the independent circuit. He also had a brief stint with IMPACT Wrestling.

In March 2023, Del Rio returned to Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide, the Mexican wrestling promotion where his career began in 2000. At Triplemania XXXII: Mexico City, Del Rio defeated Nic Nemeth (formerly known as Dolph Ziggler) to capture the AAA World Heavyweight Championship.

Recently, there has been speculation about the 47-year-old potentially returning to WWE following his comments expressing interest in a comeback. However, according to Fightful Select, the Stamford-based company is currently not interested in bringing Del Rio back. This is not surprising, given that both of his previous departures from the company were reportedly marred by allegations of unprofessional conduct and disagreements.

Despite these controversies, Del Rio's tenure in the Stamford-based promotion was highly successful. He is a two-time WWE Champion, a two-time World Heavyweight Champion and a two-time United States Champion. He is also Royal Rumble winner and a Money in the Bank winner.

Former WWE Champion was in good terms with Vince McMahon

In a recent interview with Sportskeeda Wrestling, Alberto Del Rio was asked about the possibility of returning to WWE.

Del Rio stated that a few years ago, his answer would have been a definite yes. He shared that he had always maintained a good relationship with former chairman Vince McMahon. However, with McMahon no longer in charge and Triple H now leading creative, Del Rio admitted he is unsure about how things are under the new regime.

"I don't know. Some years ago, the last time you and I talked, I mean, I said yes because everybody knows this, I was always in good terms with the man [Vince McMahon], but the man is not there anymore, so I don't know how it is today when it comes to the people running the company," he said.
