Rami Sebei, popularly known by his pseudonym Sami Zayn, is an accomplished Canadian grappler of Syrian descent. Born on July 12, 1984, in Laval, Quebec, he comes from a Syrian Muslim family that immigrated to Canada before his birth. Due to his heritage, he is proficient in several languages, including Arabic, French and English.
Zayn stepped into the ring for the first time as Stevie McFly with the FLQ promotion. He later adopted the moniker El Generico, performing for various wrestling federations, including the International Wrestling Syndicate (IWS), Chikara, Ring of Honor (ROH), Dragon Gate Japan Pro-Wrestling, DDT Pro-Wrestling, EVOLVE Wrestling, Westside Xtreme Wrestling (wXw), Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA), and Combat Zone Wrestling (CZW).
After honing his skills in multiple independent promotions, Zayn inked a multi-year deal with World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) in January 2013, officially joining the NXT roster. He eventually made his way to the main roster and is currently part of the Raw brand.
