Summerslam 2014 Review: A tale of spectacular moments

Lesnar had the last laugh which he stamped on his face with authority

Ziggler won. Stephanie McMahon can add another stellar, dramatic match to her list of spectacular wrestling bouts. Paige and AJ delivered a good match. If anything, this PPV was a triumph not only on the hype build-up level but also on wrestling levels. There were a few matches that did not really have much of an effect. Roman Reigns may be the next big thing in waiting but for now he has to take shelter in the fact that his former teammates claimed this night more than he did.

Summerslam was essentially a night dominated by ‘This is Awesome’ chants.

Kicked off in Style

Though the actual kickoff match happened on Youtube which featured Cesaro against Rob Van Dam, what the world actually saw was the televised match between Ziggler and Miz. Though it wasn’t a wrestling classic, it was a treat to have watched it. Why? Because Ziggler won and who could have thought that would happen?! For Ziggler, wins have been so hard to come by and at Summerslam he did not just win, he became a champion.

This wasn’t the last title change of the night. The night had just begun.

The Match of The Night

The camera movements in this match gave it such a breathless effect. Ambrose lost but he won many hearts. He was the highlight reel. Rollins sold each and every move really well and the sea of superstars acting as lumberjacks worked out really well and it was spectacular how they made this match turn out the way it did. The ‘This Is Awesome’ chants erupted in the arena when Ambrose leaped onto Rollins who was himself being carried by many superstars. Then there was the lunatic clothesline Ambrose usually delivers his opponents and Rollins sold the heck out of it. And then Ambrose went on to probably plant a kiss of death on Rollins, so it seemed, and in a poetic moment he delivered and tried to finish the match off with Rollins’ own Curb Stomp. Ambrose looked like he’ll almost cry tears of redemption. But it was not to be. Chaos ensued when Kane interrupted and all the lumberjacks just went at each other. Rollins’ briefcase came to the aid and that was it.

This dominated the middle phase of the night

High on Drama

Stephanie McMahon’s match was the third last match of the night. This was followed by Reigns- Orton and the main event featuring Lesnar-Cena

And believe me when I say it, her match was the best compared to the matches that followed. She had the crowd in the palm of her hands and that says a lot about her character and the importance of it. People just can’t help but react to the boss lady. By the way, Ronda Rousey was amongst the audience watching this match.

The match started slowly but there were no ‘boring’ chants or any other chant for that matter. The antics of Stephanie, presence she really has as the boss and her history of matches in the Attitude Era, really had everyone waiting for her to do something spectacular. The climatic moments of the match was just amazing to watch. Triple H and Nikki Bella deserve credit for it too and so does Brie for pulling off some of the moves that she did.

Nobody expected much from this match but it was enjoyable the whole time. And for once a divas match was hard to follow upon. It helps when the boss’s daughter is in that match.

The Talk of The Town

But maybe, the bottom line of the PPV was how John Cena was dominated. Cena lost clean and he was not even injured or anything. Lesnar was hyped as the beast and he delivered 16 German Suplexes to Cena. 16! This match ended pretty quickly. Cena did not even put up much of a fight. This might be goodbye for a while as he promotes his films.

At Summerslam, we did not get the heel Cena that was promised by the man himself. What we got was what every Cena detractor has been wanting for quite some time- Cena losing clean in THIS fashion
