The biggest winners and losers of Survivor Series 2019

The
The "Big Dog" roared.

Disappointment. That's the major word I have in mind for Survivor Series this year. It just felt like it could have been a lot more than it was.

The three-way format of the show and constant triple threat matches presented some problems, and more than once, it felt like WWE was simply trying to push NXT because the company can't stand losing to AEW like clockwork on Wednesday nights (this past week was the first time in eight weeks that the Yellow brand "won," and only just barely).

Nevertheless, some stars were made. Survivor Series is traditionally the time when stars start to align for WrestleMania. Can the results from last night tell us about that? Or was it simply a desperate boost for NXT without betraying larger plans?

Here are the biggest winners and losers of Survivor Series 2019:

New Champs in WWE! More RIGHT HERE

Loser: Asuka

Charlotte will get revenge.
Charlotte will get revenge.

We should know by now that whenever Asuka and Charlotte Flair get involved with one another, it's bad for Asuka. That's what looks to be happening again after last night. With the rumored tag team TLC match between these two, Kairi Sane, and Becky Lynch next month, don't be surprised if Charlotte once again winds up getting the last laugh, and Asuka loses yet another title to her.

It would be for little purpose, especially since it likely just sets up yet another rematch between Charlotte and Becky for WrestleMania, but don't be surprised if that's what WWE winds up doing.

Winner: Rhea Ripley

The bigger story in the same match was Rhea Ripley, who was arguably the biggest winner of the entire Survivor Series weekend. The night after fending off Shayna Baszler and her team at War Games at a numerical disadvantage, she was the sole survivor of the women's elimination match, albeit not without some help, which was annoying.

Nevertheless, it's clear that WWE is high on Rhea Ripley, for good reason. Hopefully she will be NXT Women's Champion sooner rather than later, and from there, the sky's the limit.

Loser: Daniel Bryan

This was obviously The Fiend's best match to date, but it feels like it could have been so much more than it was. The build was unfortunately rushed. I think most people would have preferred to see this as SmackDown's WrestleMania program, but that certainly won't be happening, especially given other developments on the night.

Nevertheless, The Fiend looked every bit the terrifying force that he is here. That red lighting is absolutely terrible though and WWE needs to get rid of it ASAP.

Winner: Roman Reigns

Roman Reigns emerged as the sole survivor in the men's elimination match. That's the strongest signal in a long time that his push back to the top of the card has finally begun. As of now, he has to be the odds-on favorite to take on Bray Wyatt for the Universal Championship at WrestleMania 36.

I'm not so certain that's a welcome development for much of the fanbase, but that's the likeliest direction in the aftermath of Survivor Series.

With The Fiend having been built up magnificently well, it will certainly feel like a big deal whenever he finally loses. WWE looks like it wants Roman Reigns to get that rub.

Loser: WWE's women's division

Last year at precisely this time, Charlotte Flair and Ronda Rousey had one of the strongest matches on the Survivor Series card. All the while, the then injured Becky Lynch was reaching stratospheric levels in the background.

A year later, this was a complete dud.

Bayley was the biggest loser, as she was obviously there just to take the fall. That undermines her and the SmackDown Women's Championship. The likely match with Sasha Banks at WrestleMania feels cold as ice right now.

I've long been a critic of Shayna Baszler and last night was no different. Once again, she flopped in a big match situation and showed why she should have lost that title ages ago. The sooner Rhea Ripley takes it, the better. The NXT women's division has suffered terribly under her reign.

Becky Lynch, meanwhile, felt cold as well. Her reign is running out of mileage. Something big needs to happen between now and WrestleMania to make fans care.

The women's division needs a shakeup, badly, and setting up yet another angle between Becky and Charlotte at the expense of the Kabuki Warriors, the only interesting women's champions right now, would be precisely the wrong one, but the one I expect.
