What's the story?
The latest episode of "Ten Pounds of Gold" featured Nick Aldis making some bold statements about his intentions with the NWA Championship and has fans believing that he may be "All-In" to participate in the Young Buck's upcoming Indie Megashow.
In case you didn't know...
After a turbulent experience with Impact Wrestling, famed rocker Billy Corgan bought historic wrestling promotion NWA. In the time since then, he has been bringing the NWA title back to its roots as Nick Aldis has been travelling the world defending the belt in the spirit of a genuine World's Champion.
New Champs in WWE! More RIGHT HERE
Aldis is mostly known for his time in TNA/Impact wrestling. Though the details are not known to the general public, Aldis has claimed in an interview with Vince Russo that though his wife Mickie James has been a fan favorite in WWE, someone backstage has spoken poorly about him which has led to his apparent "blacklisting" from the company.
His time with the NWA has been chronicled on their Youtube series "10 Pounds of Gold."
The heart of the matter
Nick Aldis spent much of the last episode engaging in an interview with radio personality Sam Roberts. In the interview, he discussed the legacy of the NWA championship and his plans to help it regain its prestige.
Aldis discussed the fact that he was in New Orleans for the weekend to support his wife at WrestleMania and to support his best friend, Marty Scurll at Ring of Honor's Supercard of Honor. (Click here to read about his involvement in Marty Scurll's match against Dalton Castle)
In the interview, he was asked about wrestlers that he would like to face off against and he mentioned Marty Scurll and Cody Rhodes. Sam Roberts then asked if he was booked for the upcoming "All In" event that Marty was self-financing with Cody and the Young Bucks.
"If they want the genuine and most prestigious...the most historic Worlds Championship in this business at that show, they would be smart to do so..."
What's next?
With the event still months away, we can expect to see more announcements in the months to come but I wouldn't be surprised if we start getting details about this sooner than later.
Billy Corgan has proven that he prioritizes storytelling so it is safe to say that he isn't going to allow Nick to be thrown into a match at a high profile event like that without having a good build in the coming months.
Author's Take
I think that Billy and Nick have been doing a great job making the NWA title relevant again. The series "Ten Pounds of Gold" tends to take a more serious journalistic approach to wrestling that we don't see in WWE except in specials. To see longer stories play out in this medium is very entertaining. It has also given opportunities to wrestlers in different promotions to get more attention.
We are in the middle of a great time for Indie wrestling, and "All In" is going to be the best example of it. This needs to happen, and I can't wait to see who he ends up facing.
Personally, I would love to see him face Cody as Nick seems to care about preserving a very old school legacy. While Cody would naturally represent that same legacy, he has done a great job of defining himself as the antithesis of his father, the American Nightmare. I have a feeling that few people would be able to disrespect the NWA Championship as well as Cody.
