The Shield - Believe in the hounds of justice

Pack-mentality isn’t exactly new in the world of wrestling and sports-entertainment. Throughout the years there have been superstars who’ve bonded together to create a faction, thanks to the similarities and common goals they share with each other. From the Fabulous Freebirds to The Four Horsemen, Degeneration X to The Nexus, the effectiveness of working in a group has been proven time and time again.

In 2012, however, that effectiveness was taken to a very unique level by the renegade alliance called The Shield. Consisting of Seth Rollins, Roman Reigns, and Dean Ambrose, The Shield reworked the word “synergy” in WWE and instantaneously became the biggest collective threat the locker room had ever seen.

I love The Shield, and I love to hate The Shield. These guys remind me of another gang I was a huge fan of, The Nexus. They have the twisted ideology of the nWo and the rebel approach of Degeneration X. But more importantly, they can put on awesome matches in the ring. I root for them most of the time, and when Team Hell No and The Undertaker took them on, I hoped for The Shield to get “buried alive”! And that’s a compliment, because the only time I get furious at superstars are when they’re a threat to my favourites. And – as was proven on one fateful SmackDown – The Shield was a major threat to not only Kane and Daniel Bryan, but also the legendary Undertaker.

I was hoping they’d follow-up on that feud at SummerSlam, but I doubt that’s going to happen with Mark Henry and The Usos in the mix at this point. What’s interesting though, is that The Shield seem to be working parallel to The Wyatt Family, which leads me to believe that a major feud is in the works and has already started to take form. They haven’t crossed paths and there seems to be no indication of any rivalry, but I’d bet that these two rebellious gangs clash latest by WrestleMania 30 next year. It’ll be insane when it finally happens.

In the meantime, it’s great to see The Shield doing well and keeping their championships. If I had one thing to add to their screen time, it would be more promos. Dean Ambrose is a master on the mic, and Seth Rollins is pretty great as well, so I don’t see why they have such few promos these days. If these guys can continue to keep their egos out of the way, there’s no telling for how long and how far they could actually go. Dean and Seth’s fast-paced ring style is extremely entertaining to watch, and Roman Reigns has channelled his brute strength into such a great ring routine that it’d be a shame to ever see this trio split up.

With enough heat behind them, we could even see a dream-team reform (maybe Evolution or DX or Nexus) to take them on at a big PPV. Here’s to hoping!
