The Rock announced in July 2012 that he would be challenging the WWE Champion for the title at Royal Rumble 2013, 6 months later. The Rock then made his return to Raw on the 7th January, 2013 edition of Raw. The Rock confronted the WWE Champion CM Punk and laid him out with a Rock Bottom. CM Punk was accused of having a partnership with The Shield as the trio had been helping Punk in retaining his WWE Championship since November 2012.

The Shield attacked The Rock on the final Raw before Royal Rumble. The Shield laid out The Great One with a Triple Power-bomb. This moment was really impressive and made The Shield seem like an even bigger threat. In the present era, where Red Hot Teams like The Ascension and The Revival are fed to the Legends for the audiences' viewing pleasure, The Shield was booked to look strong, at the expense of The Rock.
