After dominating the WCW for a solid amount of time period in the Monday Night Wars, the dissension and signs of tension finally began to showcase between prominent nWo members in the form of Kevin Nash, Scott Hall, Randy Savage, and leader Hulk Hogan. The differences between the members of the faction was becoming more apparent day-by-day as Nash and Savage started to realize that leader Hulk Hogan was only in the nWo for his own benefits.

With Hogan, Hall, and Savage all in contention to become the World Heavyweight Champion, the cracks within the nWo were visible as daylight and with Hogan obviously becoming the WCW World Champion for the fourth time, it was finally down to the rest of the members to choose a side in the on-going nWo Civil War.

On the 4th of May, on an episode of Nitro, Randy Savage along with Kevin Nash, and Konnan showed up with black shirts with a red nWo logo on it, as the entire Pro Wrestling world witnessed the birth of the nWo Wolfpac!

Shortly afterwards, the Wolpac started growing in numbers as the likes of Miss Elizabeth, Curt Hennig, Dusty Rhodes, and Rick Rude all joined the red and black and even at one point, the legendary Sting also started sporting the red and black of the nWo as well.
