Top 10 WWE SummerSlam facts and stats

History is not one of the factors that the WWE fans would often look into when they want to know the result of a wrestling match, but one cant help to notice how the stats and facts are arranged when WWE is gearing up for the biggest party of Summer.The company would be rolling out their 27th SummerSlam on August 17th from the Staples Centre, a venue which has exclusive rights to the pay-per-view from 2009.Over the years, there have been many memorable matches and segments from the pay-per-view and here is a look at some of the interesting facts with some weightage given to the wrestlers who will feature in this years edition.

#10 Most number of matches Undertaker (15)

Long before the Undertaker was confined to WrestleMania, SummerSlam used to be the playground for the Phenom. He has had 15 matches in summer’s biggest party so far and though the chances of another one are low, the fans have high hopes.

And though the big number wouldn’t be remembered by the fans, there were many memorable moments from the lot.

This includes the ruining the wedding of Randy Savage and Elizabeth with Jake the Snake Roberts in 1991 and the infamous Undertaker vs. Undertaker match in 1994 and who can forget the Hell in a Cell match that he had with Edge in 2008?

#9 Hulk Hogan is undefeated in the pay-per-view (6-0)

Before the whole Attitude and PG came across, WWE was carried around by the strong shoulders of Hulk Hogan. He was the face of the company for more than a decade and had some big matches at SummerSlam as well.

Being at the epitome of the roster, Hogan was often pampered with his booking and this ended up giving him an undefeated streak at SummerSlam.

Hogan wrestled at the pay-per-view on six separate occasions and came out wining all of them. And with the news breaking out that he is preparing for one last match, we never know if Hogan’s undefeated streak at SummerSlam could be extended.

#8 The United Championship has only changed hands one time

The United States championship has been in a precarious situation in 2014 as it fails to find relevance in amidst all the creative chaos.

Dean Ambrose holding the title didn’t do any good while Sheamus proved to be ineffective after the initial period. And the chances of the US title making a big impact on August 17 are unlikely according to the history.

Despite being an important midcard title, the US title has changed hands once in SummerSlam. It happened back in 2005 when the one who shouldn’t be name (Chris Benoit in case you are confused with Voldemort) defeated then champion, Orlando Jordan.

#7 Longest consecutive matches streak John Cena (10)

While Hogan was the poster boy for WWE before the Attitude Era, John Cena is the one who sat pretty in that throne when WWE morphed into the Ruthless Aggression Era.

Cena made his debut in the pay-per-view in 2004 where he defeated Booker T to retain his United States championship and from then, Cena has featured in every SummerSlam that the company has presented to their fans.

His match with Brock Lesnar this year would be the Cenation leaders 11th consecutive match at the pay-per-view and he will be looking to add on to the memorable matches that he had so far.

#6 Most number of wins Undertaker (9)

We can’t get enough of this legendary superstar can we? Well, another stat which shows that SummerSlam was Taker’s backyard is the number of wins he had at the pay-per-view.

The Phenom has won 9 of his 15 matches and main evented the show on four separate occasions. His close competitors are well behind him making it clear that Taker might hold on to his impressive record for some more time.

A SummerSlam history without Taker would be full of voids and apparently the same applies for professional wrestling as he has given every inch of his sweat and blood for the business he loved.

#5 Tag title has been defended only twice in the past decade

This would be a bad news for the portion of the WWE fans who are expecting to see a good tag team bout at Staples Centre this year.

WWE has shown some efforts to improve their tag team division with the addition of Slator Gator and the team of Big E and Kofi Kingston but they are yet to make a match for the title at the pay-per-view. And history suggests that they might just skip the idea of the title being defended.

Over the past decade, the tag titles have been defended only twice in SummerSlam with the first coming in 2009 where Big Show and Chris Jericho (Jerishow ) defeated Cryme Tyme (They were a real deal back then). The second match was between the team of Kofi Kingston and R- Truth against Prime time players in 2012.

#4 A Stage for the youngsters

WWE have always been willing to push their youngsters to the moon. A handful of events might’ve played stage for the same, but SummerSlam in particular have an interesting fact about youngsters becoming champions.

Back in 2002, Brock Lesnar made his SummerSlam debut when he faced off against The Rock for the WWE title. Lesnar was 25 back then and he became the youngest ever champion when he defeated The People's Champion.

Two years later, Randy Orton excelled the record at an age of 24 when he defeated Chris Benoit. We might not see young champions this year, but the youngster would be coming out of the curtains to shine under the spotlight.

#3 Intercontinental championship has changed hands 13 times (higher than any other title)

Miz returned to WWE after a long hiatus last month and went on to become the Intercontinental champion at Battleground.

SummerSlam would be his first pay-per-view as the champion and it doesn’t bring any good news for the Awesome one. The Intercontinental title has changed 13 times in Summerslam which is much higher than any other championship in the promotion.

Names like Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels, Edge, Steve Austin and Triple H has reaped the benefits of this jinx and hopefully Dolph Ziggler would be able to do the same to pick his career up from the ruins.

#2 Mr. WrestleMania should be actually Mr. SummerSlam

Shawn Michaels is recognized as one of the best superstars that have gazed the squared circle. He has delivered some excelled performances throughout his career and his consistency earned him the tag, Mr. WrestleMania.

However, WrestleMania record of Michaels is apparently not as good as his run in SummerSlam. He has a 6-11 win to loss record at WrestleMania while he is 6-4-1 in the summer’s big event.

It would be hard to compare the quality of the matches he has been involved in both the pay-per-views, but if the name was given on the basis of numbers, Michaels should be Mr. SummerSlam instead of being Mr. WrestleMania.

#1 Most number of losses John Cena (6)

Well, this one deserved the top spot heading into this years SummerSlam. Cena is all set to take on Lesnar for the WWE World heavyweight title at Staples centre on August 17 and he would have to shake off his history to retain the title.

As mentioned earlier, Cena has the record of most consecutive SummerSlam matches right now and along with that he is also the one who picked up the most losses.

His first defeat came at the hands of Edge in 2006 and the last came against none other than Daniel Bryan in 2013. Cena fans will have to find new nails to bite for his match against the Beast as the facts and stats suggest that SummerSlam isnt Cenas strong hold.
