Top 3 highly-rated Roman Reigns PPV matches of 2019

We're just over a month and a half away from the end of 2019 and an interesting year in WWE for Roman Reigns. The former Universal and WWE Champion has been somewhat moved down the card over the past 12 months, with less high profile bouts at the likes of WrestleMania and SummerSlam.

Reigns, of course, was still battling his second bout of cancer at the beginning of the year, having to relinquish his Universal Championship in October of 2018. Since his return at WrestleMania this year, The Big Dog hasn't missed a step and has been putting on solid performances throughout 2019.

With it being so close to the end of the year I wanted to take a look at some of WWE's top performers and their top 3 bouts throughout the year.

So, here are the Top 3 rated Roman Reigns matches of 2019:

#1 WWE Fastlane - The Shield vs Bobby Lashley, Drew McIntyre and Baron Corbin - 4.5 Stars

The perfect swansong

We start with one of the final matches to feature the three members of The Shield, Rollins, Ambrose and of course, Reigns. This seemed like a perfect swansong for one of the most important and dominant factions to emerge from WWE in the past decade.

The Shield gave the crowd exactly what they wanted in the main event of Fastlane. They 'played all of the hits' and finally defeated Baron Corbin following a Superkick, Superman Punch, Dirty Deeds, and The Shield bomb.

Whilst this will probably not be remembered as one of the greatest matches in Reigns' overall career it was a perfect send-off for The Shield and a reminder that those three men were pivotal to the current landscape of WWE.

#2 WWE Hell In a Cell 2019: Roman Reigns and Daniel Bryan vs Luke Harper and Erick Rowan - 4 Stars

Reigns and Bryan formed a strong team

Jumping forward quite ahead to just last month and Reigns' appearance at the Hell In a Cell PPV event. The build-up to this bout was extremely odd, with attempted homicide being just one aspect of the 'who was Reigns mystery attacker' storyline that WWE was looking to portray.

Many fans felt that Daniel Bryan would eventually 'turn' on Reigns in this match and re-align himself with Rowan & Harper. This didn't happen, and we actually were treated to a solid bout that unfortunately will be overlooked in history due to the controversy of the main event.

The Tornado style rules for the match really helped to give the bout a sense of urgency and propelled the action forward following a Match Of The Year candidate in Sasha Banks vs Becky Lynch. Definitely one to go back and watch if you forgot it in the quagmire of the main event controversy.

#3 WWE Extreme Rules 2019: Roman Reigns and The Undertaker vs Drew McIntryre and Shane McMahon - 4 Stars

It's been interesting to note that Reigns' top-rated bouts this year have all been in a tag team setting. This is potentially WWE looking to pull back on the positioning of the character and bring back the Roman Reigns that fans truly loved in the beginning of his Shield run.

This final bout was very interesting because the focus was squarely on The Undertaker. The Deadman had faced Goldberg in a prior match in Saudi Arabia that, due to a concussion incident, meant the bout was essentially a write-off. You could almost feel 'Taker's sense of redemption when the bell rang to end the match, having given a performance that was far more fitting of the character that the WWE Universe know and love.

Reigns himself was also impressive in this match, again another opportunity to introduce plunder and a No DQ stipulation, a format that I feel Reigns thrives in best.

As I mentioned before this has been more of a low-key year for Reigns, following his second battle with leukaemia and subsequent return he has been utilised in more of a mid-card featured role, at least until his recent move to SmackDown.
