Asuka started this year as the SmackDown Women's Champion, and she will end the year as the Women's Tag Team Champion. Hence, the Empress of Tomorrow has had a decent year if not the best year of her career. Knowing the standards she set on NXT, Asuka fell short this year.
Asuka wore the most coveted women's title of the Blue Brand around her waist when the year began and remained champion after beating Becky Lynch at Royal Rumble. Unfortunately, she dropped it to Charlotte Flair before WrestleMania 35. Asuka eventually found her tag team partner in Kairi Sane, with whom she won the Women's Tag Team Titles from Alexa Bliss and Nikki Cross. Known as The Kabuki Warriors, they have been remarkable champions thus far.

Charlotte Flair has been a pioneer of the women's division after making her main roster debut a few years ago. Winning the SmackDown Women's Championship thrice this year, Charlotte has had a fantastic year, even though her title reigns didn't last long. Besides grabbing the gold, she has also achieved other momentous feats this year.
Charlotte was amongst the last two in the women's Royal Rumble match, which Becky Lynch went on to win. She won the SmackDown Women's Championship from Asuka and subsequently main-evented at the Grandest Stage of Them All. Charlotte won back the SmackDown Women's Championship from Becky Lynch at Money in the Bank, yet she dropped again to Bayley, who cashed in the Women's Money in the Bank contract.
Trish Stratus, arguably one of the biggest names in the history of women's division, faced Charlotte at SummerSlam, where the latter retired the legendary Superstar. Charlotte set her sights on the SmackDown Women's Championship again, winning it back from Bayley at Hell in a Cell. However, she lost the title five days later in a rematch against Bayley on an episode of SmackDown. Charlotte is currently part of RAW, and she has been in the Women's Tag Team Championship picture for a while. With Royal Rumble around the corner, Charlotte will be favorite to win it for the first time in her career.
