Top 5 former WWE Superstars who should make a comeback

Wrestlers today have it rough and hard. With the ever-increasing exposure to the business workings, the chances of newer guys to break the glass ceiling has just gotten tougher. And the fans too have a big role to play in that.

Anytime a new guy starts showing promise, the obvious comparisons begin and that places that much more load on the new performer and more often than not, it ends up being underwhelming. But, also a lot of times, it’s a huge compliment and more than anything, it shows how loyal the WWE fans are, just like other sports fans, and that’s what separates prowrestling fans from other forms of entertainment where the fans tend to be extremely fickle.

Being the foremost brand in the world in professional wrestling, the company has had a litany of superstars who have come and gone, with many making a significant mark in introducing and solidifying this form of entertainment in the mainstream. Among the ones who have walked out of the door, some you may never want to return and others you never wanted to leave.

While not everyone who is good or popular gets to be a major star, to make it in the WWE is one of the toughest things to do I would imagine. Superstars leave for various reasons : some leave to pursue other careers, some due to injury and some due to differences with the company. Regardless of the reasons, there are quite a few superstars out there who may have been gone from the company for a while but certainly not forgotten and the fans clamour for their return.

The ones listed below are my personal picks and while I would love to go by the quality of matches that the returning wrestler would provide, the reality is that for a superstar to return and make any sort of impact, it is essential for him/her to have some sort of box-office appeal. And that these following gentlemen do have in spades as proven with their track record.

Scott Steiner

‘Big Poppa Pump’ has always been a personal favourite of mine, given his natural heel persona and how it hasn’t changed or been tamed one bit over the years. One of the best gimmicks in recent memory, as a narcissistic alpha-male, Steiner has few peers. While his last run with the WWE wasn’t upto par, a lot of it can be attributed to poor booking and his foot injury which limited him from doing anything of note.

But, just the novelty factor that he brings to the table owing to his look, is good enough to put butts on seats and while not an eloquent speaker on the mic, he has a unique style that makes his promos extremely entertaining. Would love to see him bully the smaller guys on the roster such as Bryan, Punk, Rollins etc.

Ultimate WarriorTalking about novelty acts, how can this individual be left far behind. He was the guy who made face-paint fashionable and the guy whose popularity made the office want him to be the successor to the hugely popular Hulk Hogan. His return at WM 12 was one of the most memorable ones ever and I couldn’t get enough of the Ultimate Warrior before he left again.

Although quite there in age, what works in warrior’s case is that he doesn’t have the wear & tear of a pro wrestler’s body yet and going by his recent promotion for the WWE game, his persona too hasn’t taken too much of a dent yet. Oh and his entrance is wrestling gold!

Kurt Angle

Kurt AngleIf there is anybody better, I would love to know. A true legend and a once-in-a-lifetime performer, if he isn’t in the WWE now, it is only because he is loyal to the TNA brand. But, it would be a shame if Kurt doesn’t get a final run in the company that got him into this business, before he hangs it up for good. Could you imagine the matches we would get if Kurt faced guys like CM Punk, Daniel Bryan, Antonio Cesaro or Dolph Ziggler? Kurt put on a clinic pretty much every time he stepped in the ring during his first WWE run, but paired with the current roster he has the chance to eclipse everything he has done in his career so far. While he seems really happy to be in TNA, a Kurt Angle retirement run would draw immense money in the WWE and something that Angle would rightly deserve.

MVPOne of the most underutilized guys in the company when he was there, WWE totally dropped the ball on him I felt. The guy is the total package and extremely passionate about the business. He could go in the ring toe-to-toe with anyone and could cut amazing promos. His talents are endorsed by the likes of Benoit, Punk among others and fresh off his stint in Japan, the time is perfect for him to make another run in the company that got him to the dance, hopefully to better results this time.

BatistaThe most recent of the ones who left, he has a flourishing career in the movies now and being one of the most popular guys in the business when he left, Dave Batista can set the cash registers ringing. He definitely is capable of making a long-term impact, though he has expressed his disdain for the current PG product on numerous occasions. But, the company does seem lacking on larger-than-life characters and on that count, he is one of the best ones that can move around.
