Coming off of a strong Money in the Bank PPV, there is a lot going on in WWE right now. Omitting the personal and backstage stories, things are looking really well going towards the biggest party of the summer, SummerSlam.
WWE has been pushing this event as the second WrestleMania for years now, and it’s been quite some time since we have had some really exciting storylines going into the PPV. But first, we have Battleground coming up next month.
Many fans suspect some of the matches will be seen again and most likely culminated at SummerSlam. Considering the Best of three trends WWE is doing lately, with such good rivalries, that we want to see more.
New Champs in WWE! More RIGHT HERE
To have good rivalries, you have to have good substance to them, and we are getting a lot of them lately. It is a slow but sure process we are seeing a new direction in the company.
The good thing with these five storylines is that there is some depth to each of them. Each rivalry offers something different. That is the aim WWE seems to go for and here’s a closer look at each of them –
#5 Golden Truth vs Breezango
This is a rather slow, but consistent rivalry. Dating all the way back to January, all four men have crossed paths, switching tag partners during the course of the year. The Golden Truth is the comedic pair while Breezango is the pretty boy pair. Each team has plenty in common with their teammate, and that’s what makes both the teams work.
The great thing about this tag-team battle is that all four men are in a story and they’re not completely forgotten about on the main roster. Not everything has to be serious, so both teams are offering something fun and fresh.
#4 Charlotte vs Sasha Banks
The rivalry fans have been waiting for is finally here! Banks has made her long-awaited return to the main roster, and she wasted no time in getting some work done. Both women’s careers in WWE have intertwined since NXT and they have an enormous amount of history as trailblazers for women’s wrestling in the Four Horsewomen.
The previous chapter between the two of them was at WrestleMania, where they produced a fantastic Triple Threat Match on the grandest stage in Dallas. Even still, these women have some unfinished business.
Charlotte’s days as the Queen of the Women’s Division are numbered with Banks as her main challenger. She transitioned from Divas Champion to the WWE Women’s Champion, so it’s been a long time since a Championship has changed hands in the Women’s Division. Banks means business, and she demonstrated that with Dana Brooke this past Thursday on SmackDown.
Banks has always given Charlotte a run for her money in the past, so expect nothing less when this rivalry goes into Battleground, then into SummerSlam. Everyone is ready for the Boss to take what she rightfully deserves – the WWE Women’s Championship.
#3 Sami Zayn vs. Kevin Owens
Another rivalry that has started in NXT and the days before that is Zayn and Owens. Their careers have paralleled since their Indy wrestling days. Even though their one on one match hasn’t been high-profile just yet, it seems WWE is teasing us with a match involving these two former friends.
From the Royal Rumble, to the Ladder Match at WrestleMania and to Money in the Bank, it’s a way to keep this match-up fresh without boring the WWE Universe with match after match. Owens has been on a mean streak and has been killing it in the ring and on the mic. Zayn is the perfect underdog in this role, as he has a fighting spirit and a will to win.
The emotional aspect of this battle is something fans can relate to, and identify with in their lives. It will be great to see these two face off in a high-profile match as early as SummerSlam or WWE could continue to hold off until WrestleMania. Either way, the rivalry deserves that and is very worthy based on substance alone.
#2 John Cena vs. AJ Styles
Ever since Styles turned heel by attacking Cena and fully aligning himself with The Club, he has been on a roll. Styles’ savagery on the mic and in the match at Money in the Bank has been brilliant and it displays a complete change of heart for the world renowned veteran. Fans are all over this rivalry even more because of the huge following Styles, Karl Anderson, and Luke Gallows had attained while in Japan as The Bullet Club.
This has been a hot start for Cena since his return. This was a dream match fourteen years in the making, and it’s surreal to see this come to fruition. Even though the match at Money in the Bank fell short, this to-and-fro fight will continue into SummerSlam, where each man will give their all and leave it all in the ring by the time the three count is done.
Cena will absolutely have to show up this time and try to keep up with Styles, who is more athletic and charismatic in the wrestling ring. Everyone deserves a match from these two that will be talked about for years to come, and it should happen at the Summer Spectacular. Cena no doubt will stick to his “Never Give Up” attitude, and that’s what’s to be expected.
Rumors are fire hot about Finn Balor; the addition would add to the hype around the Styles-Cena enmity and it could continue past SummerSlam. With Cena already at a disadvantage, he might just have to call on some backup.
#1 Dean Ambrose vs. Seth Rollins
This rivalry with Ambrose and Rollins is welcomed and fans never get tired of Ambrose’s antics in pestering the former two-time WWE World Heavyweight Champion. Of course, everyone knows about their roots in The Shield and while we are all still hoping for a reunion one day, we will just have to settle for this battle for the time being.
Ambrose and Rollins have gone back and forth in paying each other back; they are the perfect protagonist to the antagonist. They had the hottest fight of the summer two years ago following the breakup of The Shield. Their first go around culminated at Hell in a Cell, which is a great compliment for any two wrestlers going head to head.
Rollins shows that he is just fine without the Authority and seeing Ambrose as the WWE World Heavyweight Champion is a great thing to witness. They have excellent chemistry in the ring, and their battle will no doubt be turned up now that the WWE World Heavyweight Championship is at stake.
When Reigns makes his return, this rivalry will turn the corner and be kicked into high speed come SummerSlam and the Triple Threat Match will surely happen at SummerSlam once again.
