This week's WWE SmackDown will not only be the first of the year, it will also mark a major change in the program as the show moves from two hours to three. Due to the momentous event, a lot can happen during the episode.
Since WWE SmackDown was created in 1999, the brand has seen several changes in its roster, name, and even network. In September last year, the blue brand switched from FOX to the USA Network. One thing that remained consistent between the networks was its two-hour runtime of 8 to 10 pm. However, that will change for its upcoming episode as it will now run from 8 pm to 11 pm.
For this list, we will look at three things to expect from the first-ever three-hour WWE SmackDown this week.
A top AEW star just called one of his colleagues 'spoiled' and 'narcissistic' HERE.
#3. Longer matches can be featured on WWE SmackDown
One of the major challenges for the Friday show's two-hour format was the limited time that could be allocated to matches, especially if they have to be paired with segments to build feuds and storylines. However, that will no longer be a problem.
With the longer format, the brand can feature not just more matches, but longer ones as well. This is beneficial to building more compelling storylines and showcasing more stars on television.
#2. A major return can take place this week
With the longer format present, the Stamford-based promotion can feature not just longer matches but can focus on segments and major moments without needing to rush. With this in mind, a return can be properly featured and savored.
There are several absent stars in the company at the moment, and one star who has been gone for more than a year is Charlotte Flair. She hasn't been seen since December 2023 after sustaining an injury in a match against Asuka. It has recently been reported that she may be gearing up for a return, and a lot of new and familiar faces can welcome her back to the brand.
#1. Tiffany Stratton to finally cash in
Tiffany Stratton has been attempting to cash in her Money in the Bank contract for months now, but she never found a good opening to do it against her partner Nia Jax. However, circumstances might change this week on WWE SmackDown.
Another star can challenge Jax for the Women's Championship and while she is focused on the challenger, Stratton can blindside her. Tiffany could even simply order an attack on the champion and promise a superstar a title shot once she becomes a champion.
