On the A&E biography of Stone Cold Steve Austin, WWE Chairman Vince McMahon revealed his first impression of the Texas Rattlesnake:
"My initial impressions of him was, 'He's wasting my time.'"
To save his career, Austin knew he had to take a stand and put The Ringmaster to rest. A stroke of luck helped him come up with the Stone Cold gimmick. It became an instant success. His new persona allowed him to work on-screen with Vince McMahon.
Despite their on-screen chemistry, Austin confessed the two did not always get along. Austin spoke about working with McMahon on The Pat McAfee Show:
"When we were feuding for damn near two years… I love that guy, I’m sure he probably loves me too. But, man, there was, for a shoot, a lot of times some animosity there when I did some of the things I did. I’ve got nothing but respect for the guy and we’re in a real good place."
Stone Cold retired from in-ring competition in 2003. He held the WWE Championship six times during his career. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2009. Since 2005, he has made sporadic appearances on WWE television, the latest being on Monday Night RAW in March 2020.
