On this past Monday Night RAW, Brock Lesnar made his long-awaited return to television, and Vince McMahon suffered the consequences. After Paul Heyman admitted he and CM Punk were behind Brad Maddox’s shady refereeing jobs and several of the attacks by The Shield, McMahon was planning to show him the door. Just as McMahon began to utter his famous, “You’re fired!”, Lesnar’s music began blaring over the speakers, and the former “Next Big Thing” hit the ring, laying out McMahon with an F-5. It was reported shortly thereafter on WWE.com that the attack by Lesnar on McMahon had resulted in McMahon breaking his hip, and he would require surgery as a result.
While the attack by Lesnar was for storyline purposes, the reasons behind it were specifically to remove Vince McMahon from television for a while. In reality, McMahon does indeed have a broken hip, and it will definitely require surgery. McMahon has had hip problems for a while now, but has put surgery off for some time, which is not unusual for the WWE chairman. However, it’s gotten to the point where surgery is a must, and McMahon has no choice but to take care of it now before the injury gets any worse.
The surgery is pretty routine, and McMahon will fully recover, likely in a timely manner. Unfortunately, yet another surgery leaves his future with the company in doubt. Although McMahon will always be the majority owner of WWE (at least until he passes it on), he isn’t getting any younger, and this is not the first time he’s had to remove himself from television to have surgery done. Despite having a great physique for his age, at 67 years old and having run the company for nearly 30 years now, all the time on the road and all of the physical angles are starting to catch up with him.
Son-in-law Paul “Triple H” Levesque has been slowly but surely taking on more responsibilities backstage. In addition to being the COO, he’s also the head of the creative department, with most of the talent discussing plans with him rather than McMahon. There have even been rumours that McMahon will completely stand down as chairman this year and hand over control to Levesque, effectively putting Levesque in full control of the company. This is only a rumour right now, but considering McMahon’s physical state and the increasing responsibilities Levesque has, it’s not completely out of the question.
Regardless, here’s to wishing Vince McMahon a speedy recovery.
