Drew McIntyre's decision to quit lasted just four days as he appeared on WWE SmackDown tonight and violently attacked CM Punk in his hometown of Chicago. He got payback after being cost the World Heavyweight Championship at Clash at the Castle: Scotland.
The Scottish Psychopath's attack saw him carry a bloodied Second City Saint through backstage and onto the ramp. He threw him down before snatching a bracelet that Punk apparently holds close to his heart. This friendship bracelet holds the names AJ Lee (his wife) and Larry (his dog).
Drew McIntyre has made the fierce rivalry between the pair more personal by stealing the bracelet. It could be a sign that the Scot is willing to make Punk's life a living hell for twice costing him the world title now.
AJ Lee and Larry are two of the most important things in the Best in the World's life. This was even on display during the AEW All Out Brawl in 2022 when he got into a real-life backstage fight with The Young Bucks and Kenny Omega. He regularly uploads pictures of the dog on his Instagram account.
CM Punk has been with AJ Lee since 2013, and the couple married in June 2014. Their relationship could be used in his feud with Drew McIntyre, given she previously wrestled in WWE. Whether tonight is a hint that she'll be returning remains to be seen.
CM Punk may have antagonized Drew McIntyre online before tonight's attack on WWE SmackDown
CM Punk cost Drew McIntyre the World Heavyweight Championship at Clash at the Castle 2024. His interference in the world title match allowed Damian Priest to pick up the win in front of an infuriated Scottish crowd in Glasgow.
Punk may have already poked the bear before then when he responded to one of McIntyre's Instagram posts. The challenger warmed up for his title match with a post dedicated to his wife, Kaitlyn Frohnapel. He wrote her initial on his wristpad with the caption:
"Always with me. I’ll see you soon."
Punk responded in the comments with a rather sarcastic response, given their current rivalry:
"(Heart emoji) Wholesome."
This, coupled with being cost the world title twice, may have pushed McIntyre over the edge. Given his rival's online antics, he may also feel justified to target Punk's loved ones.
Punk and McIntyre look to be headed for a match once the former is medically cleared to compete. That could happen at WWE SummerSlam (August 3) at Cleveland Browns Stadium in Ohio.
