The Money in the Bank is one of the prominent pay-per-view events in professional wrestling, organised annually by World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). The concept of the Money in the Bank was created by current AEW superstar Chris Jericho and former WWE writer Brian Gewirtz. During this event, multiple wrestlers use ladders to retrieve a briefcase hanging above the ring. Inside the briefcase is a contract that guarantees the winner a match for a world championship.
This contract remains valid for one year until the next year's Money in the Bank event. The holder of the briefcase, often referred to as "Mr. Money in the Bank," can cash in the contract for a world title match at any time and any place. The defence of the contract can occur either in a one-on-one match or within the context of an ongoing match, depending upon the mindset and strategic approach of the briefcase holder.
First Money in the Bank Ladder Match
The first Money in the Bank Ladder Match was held at WrestleMania 21 in 2005, exclusively for the Raw superstars. Edge, Chris Jericho, Kane, Christian, Chris Benoit and Shelton Benjamin were the six superstars who participated in that match where Edge emerged victorious. Edge held onto his briefcase for 280 days, a record that still stands today. He used his contract to challenge John Cena at New Year's Revolution on January 8, 2006, immediately following Cena's title defense in the Elimination Chamber match. He defeated Cena in 1:46 with two spears to win his first of eleven world championships.
First Money in the Bank Pay-Per-View Event
Since 2005, five additional Money in the Bank ladder matches were held annually until WrestleMania XXVI. At WrestleMania XXVI in 2010, Jack Swagger (Jake Hager) won the Money in the Bank briefcase by defeating nine other opponents: Christian, Dolph Ziggler, Drew McIntyre, Evan Bourne, Kane, Kofi Kingston, Matt Hardy, MVP, and Shelton Benjamin. Nearly a month later, Swagger cashed in the contract on Chris Jericho and secured the World Heavyweight Championship for the first time in his career.
After WrestleMania XXVI, the inaugural Money in the Bank pay-per-view event was held for both Raw and SmackDown roster on July 18, 2010 in Kansas City, Missouri, United States. The event featured total eight matches, including the two Money in the Bank ladder matches. The first Money in the Bank ladder match was for the Raw brand, where The Miz became "Mr. Money in the Bank" by defeating Chris Jericho, Edge, Evan Bourne, John Morrison, Mark Henry, Randy Orton, and Ted DiBiase. He later cashed in the contract on Randy Orton and captured the WWE Championship on the November 22, 2010, episode of Raw.
The Second Money in the Bank Ladder match was for the Smackdown brand, where Kane grabbed the briefcase by beating seven other superstars such as Big Show (Paul Wight), Christian, Dolph Ziggler, Drew McIntyre, Kofi Kingston, Matt Hardy and ‘The American Nightmare’ Cody Rhodes. Kane cashed in his money in the bank briefcase on the same night, and won the World Heavyweight Championship by defeating Rey Mysterio.
First Women's Money in the Bank Ladder Match
The Women's Money in the Bank Ladder Match was first introduced at the Money in the Bank event on June 18, 2017, in St. Louis, Missouri, United States. Carmella won the first-ever Women’s Money in the Bank ladder match by defeating competitors such as Becky Lynch, Charlotte Flair, Natalya, and Tamina with assistance from James Ellsworth. After winning the briefcase, she was also initially referred to as 'Miss Money in the Bank'.
However, General Manager Daniel Bryan forced her to relinquish the briefcase due to Ellsworth's interference. In a rematch against the same opponents, with Ellsworth banned from ringside, Carmella secured the briefcase herself on June 27, 2017. She later cashed in the contract on April 10, 2018, holding it for a record 287 days, and defeated Charlotte Flair to become the WWE SmackDown Women's Champion.
First Money in the Bank event held outside the United States
Money in the Bank 2023 took place on July 1, 2023, at The O2 Arena in London, England, marking the first time the event was held outside of the United States. The event comprised seven matches in total, including two ladder matches and a main event match. Damian Priest of Raw and Iyo Sky of SmackDown emerged victorious in their respective men's and women's Money in the Bank ladder matches. In the main event, Jey Uso pinned Roman Reigns for the first time since December 2019 and secured a victory in a 'Bloodline Civil War' tag team match between The Usos (Jey Uso and Jimmy Uso) and The Bloodline (Roman Reigns and Solo Sikoa).
