After walking out of WWE in May 2022, Mercedes Moné, formerly known as Sasha Banks, has become one of the top competitors in NJPW. She recently wrestled in the inaugural NJPW STRONG Women's Championship tournament at Resurgence on Sunday, May 21. It has now been confirmed that the former IWGP Women's Champion suffered a major injury during the match.
After defeating Stephanie Vaquer, Moné faced Willow Nightingale for the title later in the night. Fans on Twitter have been speculating she received the injury after she slipped off the top rope and landed outside of the ring. PWInsider has reported that she broke her ankle during the contest.
Sean Ross of Fightful tweeted that current WWE Superstar Tamina was present backstage during the event. He also added that she helped Moné through the back before she went to the hospital. The two stars have been friends since crossing paths in WWE and have remained close even after Sasha Banks' departure from the company.
Moné uploaded a photo on her Instagram Story confirming her injury, with Tamina's distinctive tattoo visible in the background and the former's injured foot.

Fans react to Mercedes Moné's (Sasha Banks) serious injury
Sasha Banks' international fanbase has grown since she took up the Mercedes Moné moniker.
She won people over during her time in WWE as she constantly pushed boundaries inside and outside of the ring. Her presence continues to captivate fans, from her stylish wrestling gears to her resilient personality.
With the news of her injury, fans everywhere expressed their well-wishes for Moné's recovery. Many shared their frustration regarding her journey, as the injury cost her the NJPW STRONG Women's Championship.
Some Twitter users also pointed out that a few other wrestlers are out due to injury, including former WWE Women's Tag Team Champion Liv Morgan.
While injuries are part of the job, it is still disheartening for fans to see their favorite stars being sidelined from active competition. Sasha Banks is a formidable wrestler and will be thirsty for the world title once she is fit.
