WWE SummerSlam's countdown kicked off with Michael Cole and Joe Tessitore. The announcers, while discussing the premium live event, revealed that Cole would be moving to WWE SmackDown as a commentator, and will be replaced by Joe Tessitore.
On July 9th, 2024, it was announced that Tessitore had signed with the Stamford-based promotion and would begin work soon as a play-by-play commentator on Monday Night RAW. As of August 2nd, 2024, the deal has been implemented, and he will begin working as the red show's lead commentator.
Born on January 1st, 1971, Tessitore graduated from the Boston College Carroll School of Management in 1993. Following that, he started his broadcasting career at KXAS-TV. He briefly worked for WRGB in 1994 before moving to WFSB, both owned by CBS. At WFSB, he began his role as a sports anchor in 1997.
In 2002, Joe Tessitore worked as a broadcaster for boxing on ESPN but also covered a wide range of sporting events. Currently, he is the lead broadcaster for world championship fights for Top Rank Boxing on ESPN. He is also the play-by-play announcer for Holey Moley on ABC with Rob Riggle and Stephen Curry. Additionally, he announces college football for ESPN and ABC.
Interestingly, his contract with WWE enables him to continue his work with ESPN and ABC. Tessitore is a renowned voice in the world of sports broadcasting, and it will be interesting to hear him call the matches on WWE RAW.
Triple H commented on Joe Tessitore joining WWE as a commentator
The commentators of WWE play a huge role during every live show and premium live event. They need to hype the superstars and matches and ensure the energy never drops.
WWE's Chief Content Officer believes that Tessitore is going to bring his signature energy to the live shows, just the way he has done for football and other big sporting events.
“Whether it’s a world title fight that’s got the globe buzzing or a college football rivalry that’s grabbed the nation’s attention, Joe’s voice provides that big event feel each time he is behind the microphone. We’re excited for Joe to join legendary WWE broadcaster Michael Cole and our esteemed announce team, bringing his signature energy and meticulous preparation to our WWE telecasts each week.”
As of now, it's unclear exactly what the commentators' tables will look like, given the changes announced at SummerSlam's countdown. However, Tessitore and Cole's brands are confirmed!
