Earlier today, the wrestling world was notified about the sad demise of Sika Anoa'i. On Instagram, Sika's nephew Jahrus Anoa'i informed the world about his uncle's death. The details surrounding the wrestler's death haven't been made public yet, but naturally, the demise has sent the world of wrestling in shock.
For those unaware, Sika Anoa'i was one of the most prominent wrestlers in the 1980s and 90s. Sika began his career with his brother Afa Anoa'i, and the duo were known as The Wild Samoans. While they made their debut in 1973 in Stampede Wrestling, they gained popularity in 1980.
That year, the Wild Samoans signed with WWE (then WWF). Not known to speak much, the dangerous tag team did all their talking in the ring. During their time with the Stamford-based promotion, Sika and Afa Anoa'i won the WWF World Tag Team Championships thrice. They were also inducted into the 2007 Hall of Fame.
Apart from his career in WWE, Sika Anoa'i and his brother Afa Anoa'i wrestled across various promotions. New Japan Pro Wrestling, Georgia Championship Wrestling, and NWA are a few of the many promotions Sika left a tremendous impact on.
After officially retiring from wrestling in 1991, Sika made sporadic appearances for WWE. In his last appearance for the promotion, Sika along with his brother Afa celebrated Sika's son, Roman Reigns' victory at Hell in a Cell 2020. The Wild Samoans are often referred to as the elders in The Bloodline story.
Roman Reigns once spoke about valuable wrestling advice he received from his father Sika Anoa'i
Over the years, Roman Reigns has arguably been WWE's biggest superstar. Since he became the leader of The Bloodline, Reigns became a money magnet for WWE. However, Reigns' ability to make money for the promotion and himself shouldn't be surprising as his father advised him about the same early in life.
This revelation was made by The Tribal Chief himself in A&E's Biography: WWE Legends. In this documentary, Reigns mentioned that from the beginning, his father, Sika Anoa'i, told him that when he comes around the ring, it's all about the money. Reigns said:
"From the very beginning my dad always taught me that when you come around this ring, it's only about money. It's only about drawing money."
Clearly, Roman Reigns did take his father's advice seriously. Even apart from this advice, having a father like Sika Anoa'i must have definitely impacted Reigns' life and career. Sika's legacy and what he did for professional wrestling is one of the many reasons he will be missed.
Everyone at Sportskeeda sends their condolences to the Anoa'i family.
