That left Lesnar with a record of 2 wins and 2 losses in the WWE. Although winning and losing doesn’t matter in a scripted sport, one has to understand that the credibility and legitimacy of Lesnar is on the line as well. With Punk going over Brock, it will hurt Lesnar more than it would hurt Punk if he lost.
Also, the beauty of this storyline lies in the babyface trying to get his hands on the evil mastermind, and after a long drawn out battle, gets to do that. Punk shouldn’t get his hands on Heyman so soon. Heyman turned on Punk barely 4 weeks ago at the Money in the Bank PPV, which isn’t sufficient time for Punk to get the “feel good” reaction.
Consider the other scenario when Lesnar goes over Punk, thanks to Heyman. Heyman then comes out the next night and says Brock is the real best in the world, and not Punk. Punk then asks for a rematch and attacks Axel, forcing Heyman to agree to the bout. Not only does it make Punk the fiery babyface, but it also gives Brock an opponent for the next PPV. Being realistic, I cannot see Brock performing for the remainder of the year if he loses to Punk. When you look at the other part timer, who is The Rock, he won the WWE championship by beating Punk twice and lost it to Cena at WrestleMania. That didn’t hurt Rock’s credibility as he came in as “movie star”, rather than a legitimate fighter.
Although WWE will go ahead with Punk beating Lesnar, it will be more impactful if they held back the victory for CM Punk. Not only will this lead to a longer program, but will also give more importance when Punk finally gets his hands on Heyman. In the end, Lesnar needs the win more than CM Punk at SummerSlam.
