Last night, on WWE Smackdown, Sami Zayn closed out the broadcast in emphatic fashion by pinning AJ Styles, the WWE Champion, for the second time in recent memory. The former "Underdog From The Underground", now a heinous villain, took full advantage of AJ Styles' preoccupation with battering Kevin Owens around ringside, to score what was effectively a clean victory.
If the result itself came as a surprise to some observers, with Styles clearly the bigger star of the pair, then the manner in which it came about must have resonated even harder.
Usually, Sami Zayn finishes off his opponents with the Helluva Kick. It seemed as though on this night, it would be business as usual, with Zayn nailing Styles with the move following yet another occasion on which Styles uncharacteristically took his eye off the ball and turned his attention to KO, on the outside.
However, Sami immediately followed the kick by grabbing hold of Styles and hitting him with a vicious Blue Thunder Bomb, a move that has rarely if ever won Zayn a WWE match previously.
I don't know why nobody backstage has thought of this before. Sure, the Helluva Kick was an okay finisher and it worked for Sami, but the kick into the Blue Thunder Bomb simply looks infinitely more devastating. It's a combination that genuinely looks like it would put somebody down for a 3-count, which is not something that can be said about most of the finishing moves used in WWE today.
It's a very powerful-looking and spectacular move, during which Sami seems to put every ounce of energy he has into driving his opponent through the canvas. Besides, the Blue Thunder Bomb has arguably always been Zayn's most "over" move, as its use in matches has almost always elicited a big response from the crowd. Making it Zayn's permanent finisher is definitely the logical thing to do in this situation.
This point of view is shared by many of the WWE Universe. On WWE's official YouTube channel, the comments section on their video of the AJ Styles vs Sami Zayn match is a forum full of people enthusiastically asserting that Sami should now always finish matches with the Blue Thunder Bomb.
Whether it was intended as a one-time-only thing or not, the WWE Universe has reacted extremely positively to this change in Sami Zayn's in-ring persona, and it would be foolish of WWE to revert to previous practices now.
This slight alteration to the way Zayn finishes matches genuinely could make a huge difference. Zayn has been totally transforming his character since his heel turn and alignment with Kevin Owens, and this tweak is another step on that journey. A deadly-looking finishing move instantly makes a superstar look more violent, and if Sami keeps putting opponents away in the same fashion that he defeated Styles on Tuesday night, he'll soon become one of the most dangerous men on Smackdown Live in his own right.
