A decade and some years back, the professional wrestling world was witnessing one of the dirtiest and most thrilling wars between two promotions. WCW and WWE went to and fro to make each other run out of business in the Monday night wars, giving the fans never before seen competition both in the ring and outside it.
Many stars fell in the heat of the competition and many rose in the equally flourishing environment. And if there one wrestler who made the greatest impact in the Monday night wars after Hulk Hogan, it had to be Goldberg.
From fighting it out in the NFL to changing the course of wrestling history, the rise of Goldberg was monumental. Though many years have passed, he and his unforgettable streak remain as a nostalgic weak point for WWE fans.
New Champs in WWE! More RIGHT HERE
WCW is no more and WWE is enjoying the complacent monopoly of the wrestling world. But still, the significance of Goldberg seems to be increasing everyday as the company is approaching its 30th anniversary edition of WrestleMania.
Vince McMahon’s product is being criticized heavily for being concentrated on the merchandise sales and comedy skits rather than kayfabe storylines and in-ring action. And the main factor that haunts the company now is the lack of established names that could be used as the backbone of events.
I don’t want to take nothing away from guys like John Cena, CM Punk or Daniel Bryan, but none of the three was even a part of the Attitude Era which is considered as the ultimate testing ground by the fans.
Wrestlers who proved themselves in that era like Brock Lesnar, Triple H, Shawn Michaels and many more still rings bells whenever they make an appearance in the ring. The sheer star power of these superstars remains unmatched, and Goldberg is a superstar who could top that list.
WWE saw the buy rates of Survivor Series plummet this year which makes WrestleMania a must win situation for the company. But the sad part is that they don’t seem like having a big match or name that could make up for the loss in previous PPVs.
This is where Goldberg comes in handy; anyone who knows what this man did wouldn’t mind selling his or her house to see him return after almost 9 years. At the same time, the new breed of fans will also get a chance to get to see what wrestling was all about in the good all days.
Goldberg stands for everything that the company was a decade ago and none of the fans would hesitate in getting on his back because of that. He doesn’t had a good relationship with the COO at the moment but in this business you never know.
Snatching Goldberg will be the “best for business” deal for Triple H and his new direction; a match between the two is sure to blast fireworks so loud that they could deafen the fans for years to come. The rebel returning superstar representing the fans going up against the evil company owner could easily be a WrestleMania main event which ends WWE’s PPV curse.
The rapid speed with which the new Goldberg DVD was sold shouts out loud that the fans want him at the grand stage. Even if the WWE couldn’t dress up Goldberg for an in-ring match, they could still utilize him as a guest referee or enforcer in any of the hyped main events.
Either way, the appearance of Goldberg is becoming a necessity as days pass and the company struggles to lure in big names into the ring. Paying him a whopping sum to make a guest appearance or a once-in-a-lifetime match wouldn’t be a bad business move for Vince, and seeing Goldberg at WrestleMania is definitely a trillion times better than seeing the fans chant for the much depleted version that WWE calls Ryback.
If it happens, then brace yourself to see the WrestleMania buy rates boom and swept away by a tsunami of nostalgia. For now though, let’s just hope, because hope is a good thing, as they said in Shawshank Redemption.
