On last night’s episode of RAW, Mick Foley introduced WWE’s newest championship: The WWE 24/7 Championship. While the belt is not very attractive and the rules aren't fully understood yet, it has the potential to be fun, especially in the social media era.
While many fans were hoping for the return of the Hardcore Championship, I’m not sure it would work in this era. Matches are paused with even the slightest sight of blood, so if the Hardcore title was brought back, imagine how many times a match would need to be stopped in the PG Era and its no blood policy.
Part of why Rey Mysterio vs Samoa Joe was so short at Money in the Bank was because Joe was busted open, so a precedent is there.
With the 24/7 title, the matches don’t need to be “hardcore” to be fun or entertaining. Just look at the segments last night with all of the superstars chasing Robert Roode and then R-Truth tricking Roode and driving away with the championship. That was entertaining, funny, and wasn’t “hardcore” at all.
The other good thing about the new championship is that it gives a lot of the guys in the back who normally aren’t on TV something to do. Guys like Titus O’Neil, The Good Brothers, Robert Roode, and many others who were doing nothing at all before this now have something to do on a weekly basis.
This is further enhanced by social media. WWE can have random 24/7 title segments streamed live on the WWE Network, Facebook Live, Twitter, and so on.
In the Attitude Era, this wouldn’t be possible since social media wasn't a thing back then, but now that it is, social media can play a huge role in whether or not the 24/7 Championship is a success or not. While it might be too early to tell how it all pans out, we should give it time to play out, and see how things go.
