Roman Reigns returned to RAW this week for the first time since his leukaemia announcement last October. The show began with his return and instead of the loud boos we have become used to during his entrance, Roman walked out to to the cheers and support of over 10,000 people. It was strange to hear his music start and not immediately be followed by a chorus of boos. Roman looked to be genuinely taken aback and surprised by the response.
He walked to the ring surrounded by the deafening chants of "Roman, Roman, Roman!" and announced that he was in remission. It was one of the greatest moments in the history of the WWE and led some fans to ask the question, will Roman Reigns ever get booed again?
I'm not saying that he should walk out on RAW next week to loud boo's from the crowd. Roman is going to be the biggest babyface in wrestling for some time to come and the pop when he eventually wins the Universal or WWE Championship again will be enormous! He will be celebrated, and rightly so, for overcoming a form of cancer and reclaiming the big title he never lost.
Even if Roman turned heel in the future, would the fans boo someone who fought through such a horrible illness and battled back to the top? Would fans separate Joe Anoa'i from Roman Reigns, would they separate the person from the character? I think those are very interesting questions.
Roman could be a face for the rest of his career and that is not necessarily a bad thing. The key is finding a way to keep Reigns interesting. Rey Mysterio and John Cena have been faces for the majority of their careers: Mysterio is always portrayed as the underdog and it's believable because of his size; Cena was a face because of his motto, what he stood for and his appeal to kids. Roman has been a face for the last few years and has never really connected with the fans. I would like to see him have a proper face character and not just be "the guy who beat cancer".
What do you think, will Roman ever be booed again and do you think he can be an interesting face for a long time? Please comment below!
