WWE is essentially story telling and what is a good story without a little romance?
Many WWE superstars have been paired together with Divas and some couples have made their chemistry work, taking their individual careers to new heights. Edge and Lita developed new dimensions to their characters with their on screen (and off screen) romance during the mid 2000s.
Miss Elizabeth was an integral part of Randy Savage’s character.
But there have been a lot of on-screen couples that were utter failures – This list takes a look at the top 5.
#5 Billy Gunn and Torrie Wilson
Billy Gunn has been repackaged multiple times in the WWE – be it as the Smoking Gunns, as part of the successful New Age Outlaws and DX stables, as part of the seemingly gay couple in the Billy & Chuck tandem and much more. But his partnership with Torrie Wilson was as random as it could get.
Gunn who had also been known as Mr.Ass and Torrie was scripted to have developed an infatuation for each other over the fact that both of them had impressive backsides – Yup, that happened.
Torrie was immensely popular on her own and the idiotic angle did not help her in any way – it made even little sense when the duo entered into a rivalry which later became a partnership with Nidia and Jamie Noble, with the latter also vying for Torrie’s affections.
Gunn’s career sunk like the Titanic and Torrie would eventually move on to better things.
#4 Al Wilson and Dawn Marie
Another attempt to incorporate glamour and family drama into story lines, the Al Wilson - Dawn Marie saga had people scratching their heads.
The storyline had Dawn Marie seduce Al Wilson, the father of Torrie as a payback for losing a number of matches to the latter. Dawn then kayfabe proceeded to marry Al and the elder Wilson seemingly died during honeymoon sex.
The storyline also had Dawn forcible making Torrie strip for filming a lesbian sex tape, distorting what was primarily supposed to be a pro-wrestling centric show into one replete with sexual innuendos and unnecessary shenanigans.
#3 Sable and Vince McMahon
Vince McMahon has had numerous affairs with WWE Divas on screen, ranging from Trish Stratus to Torrie Wilson and Stacy Keibler. But none was as awkward as Vince’s relationship with Sable.
Sable was the most popular Diva in wrestling in the late 90s and she had an acrimonious exit from the WWE, filing a sexual harassment case against her former employer. This made it weird that she would be put in a storyline as Vince McMahon’s mistress during her return to the company in 2003.
This was despite the fact that Sable was having a relationship with the then WWE Champion Brock Lesnar at the time. Whatever you say about Vince McMahon, he certainly had the grapefruits.
#2 Natalya and The Great Khali
Another case of random pairing, Natalya and the Great Khali’s on screen chemistry stuck out like a sore thumb. The daughter of Jim Neidhart was – still is – one of the greatest in-ring workers in the women’s division whereas Khali was pretty much one of the worst wrestlers to have set foot inside a WWE ring.
Khali’s initial aura had worn off and the WWE Creative created a filler role pairing the two together.
It wasn’t a success, to say the very least.
