WrestleMania 35: 4 matches that could still realistically be added to the card

One of the biggest match cards in WWE history is shaping up nicely ahead of WrestleMania 35, with 13 matches having already been announced for the annual extravaganza on April 7.

Ronda Rousey vs. Charlotte Flair vs. Becky Lynch (Raw/SmackDown Women’s Championship) will be the first women’s main event in WrestleMania history, while the featured male title matches will see Seth Rollins challenge Brock Lesnar for the Universal Championship and Kofi Kingston challenge Daniel Bryan for the WWE Championship.

Bobby Lashley vs. Finn Balor (Intercontinental Championship), Samoa Joe vs. Rey Mysterio (United States Championship) and Buddy Murphy vs. Tony Nese (Cruiserweight Championship) are also scheduled for the show, while Sasha Banks & Bayley will defend the Women’s Tag Team titles against Nia Jax & Tamina, Natalya & Beth Phoenix and Billie Kay & Peyton Royce.

The non-title matches for the event are as follows: Triple H vs. Batista (No Holds Barred), Kurt Angle vs. Baron Corbin (Angle’s ‘farewell match’), Shane McMahon vs. The Miz (Falls Count Anywhere), AJ Styles vs. Randy Orton, Roman Reigns vs. Drew McIntyre, and the Andre The Giant Memorial Battle Royal.

Despite the stacked match card so far, there are still plenty of prominent Superstars and storylines that have not yet been assigned a match at this year’s “Show of Shows”, so let’s take a look at four matches that could still realistically be added to the event.

#4 WrestleMania Women’s Battle Royal

Naomi outlasted 20+ other women on the WrestleMania 34 kickoff show to become the inaugural winner of the WrestleMania Women’s Battle Royal.

This year, WWE has heavily promoted the Andre The Giant Memorial Battle Royal over the last two weeks, with Braun Strowman and SNL’s Michael Che and Colin Jost being confirmed as participants so far, but the women’s version of the over-the-top match has not yet been mentioned in the build-up to WrestleMania 35.

Given that WWE has focused so much on the women’s division over the last year, plus the fact that established Superstars like Asuka, Carmella, Naomi and Mickie James are without a match at ‘Mania, the likelihood is that WWE will announce the Battle Royal for the WrestleMania 35 kickoff show at some point before April 7.

#3 The Usos vs. The Hardy Boyz

WWE appeared to be focusing more and more on the SmackDown Live tag division earlier in 2019. However, since Shane McMahon betrayed The Miz at Fastlane to kick-start their WrestleMania 35 rivalry, new champions The Usos have been largely forgotten about.

Jimmy & Jey have still featured sporadically on SmackDown Live, notably on this week’s episode when they refused to face long-term rivals The New Day in the gauntlet match, but their backstage promos have not yet led to them receiving any opponents for WrestleMania 35.

Given that the duo has defeated almost every tag team there is to defeat in WWE, the only realistic opponents that they could face in a two-on-two match at MetLife Stadium is The Hardy Boyz – a tag team they have never competed against.

Matt & Jeff, who are undefeated since reuniting, have both mentioned how they would like to face The Usos, so perhaps we could see a #1 contender match take place on next week’s SmackDown Live to set up the match in time for ‘Mania.

#2 The Revival vs. Aleister Black & Ricochet

After an underwhelming 22 months as part of WWE’s main roster, The Revival finally won the big one on the February 11 episode of Raw when they defeated Chad Gable & Bobby Roode to become Raw Tag Team champions.

Since then, Scott Dawson & Dash Wilder have torn the house down at several live events against Gable & Roode, but WWE appears to have ended the television storyline between the two tag teams following Gable & Roode’s defeat against Aleister Black & Ricochet on the March 11 episode of Raw.

With WrestleMania 35 edging ever closer, Black & Ricochet are the only tag team on Monday nights who have a legitimate claim to challenge for the Raw Tag Team titles next, having defeated Dawson & Wilder in another non-title match this week.

In all likelihood, this match would only appear on the WrestleMania 35 kickoff show, as opposed to the main pay-per-view, but there is still a very good chance it will be added to the card before April 7.

#1 The Undertaker vs. Elias

When all’s said and done, The Undertaker’s legendary WWE career will be defined by his appearances at WrestleMania.

“The Deadman” won 21 consecutive matches at WWE’s biggest show of the year before losing to Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 30. Since then, he has continued to compete at the event, defeating Bray Wyatt, Shane McMahon and John Cena, as well as losing against Roman Reigns in a match which, at the time, appeared to signal the end of his career.

As the years have progressed, ‘Taker’s importance to WWE and WrestleMania has decreased more and more, but at least his appearance at last year’s event was heavily promoted by Cena in the weeks leading up to the show. This year? Well, his name has not even been mentioned.

Regardless of his in-ring ability and complete lack of storyline right now, it is very hard to believe that a not-yet-retired ‘Taker would be left off the show by Vince McMahon & Co., so we will surely see him appear in some capacity at MetLife Stadium.

If “The Deadman” competes, his most likely opponent is Elias. WWE’s resident guitarist would be able to set up a match with one witty lyric in a song, and all it would take is the sound of a ‘GONG’ to get fans on board with an impromptu encounter between the two.
