We started this series a week ago, looking back at some of the greatest professional wrestlers in the industry. This series looks at the 15 greatest technical wrestlers in the history of WWE, those who are technically gifted, and have been some of the most amazing professional wrestlers this industry has ever witnessed. Today, we come to number 9, and it is someone who hasn’t been successful in winning ‘The big one’, but is respected by all the professional wrestling fans around the world. He has been a great ambassador for professional wrestling, and is considered to be one of the toughest wrestlers in the business. He is also arguably the greatest wrestler to have come from the United Kingdom, and is one of the very few who work ‘stiff’. He has been a part of the WWE for over a decade, and traveled the world to hone his craft. He is also known as ‘A man’s man’, and he is none other than William Regal.
Starting from humble beginnings to being respected by his peers as one of the greatest technical wrestlers in the history of the business, Regal worked his way up the ladder in the industry. Regal started off as an act in a carnival booth (yes, you read that right!) and wrestled for local promotions in England, and traveled to Germany and South Africa before being called up to World Championship Wrestling (WCW). It was here that Regal achieved his initial success in the business, and was given the name of ‘Lord’ Steven Regal. He won the WCW World Television title on four separate occasions, and was involved in an infamous incident in WCW. During a match with Goldberg, which was supposed to be a squash match, Regal out-wrestled Goldberg, which left Bill embarrassed. After the match, Regal was released from WCW and he headed to the WWF.
His first run with the WWF was uneventful, and due to his personal addictions, he was sent to rehab and was then released from the WWF, after which he went back to WCW. He continued to be a heel and wrestled in the tag team division, and when he was offered another chance by the WWF, he jumped ships once again. Regal put on some of the greatest matches in wrestling history against the likes of Chris Benoit, whom he faced on several occasions. His match with Benoit during the third annual Brian Pillman Memorial show is heralded as one of the greatest technical wrestling matches in the history of the business, and both the performers were lauded for their efforts. He then debuted on the main roster and won the European championship.
William Regal won the WWE Intercontinental title on two separate occasions, the European Championship four times, the Hardcore championship five times and the held the tag team titles on four occasions. Regal was used as a TV personality more than a wrestler in his later career, with him being a Commissioner and the General Manager of RAW. Regal had to fight his personal demons, and had to take time off due to a heart condition in ’04. Regal then went on to win the King of the Ring tournament in ’08, defeating CM Punk in the tournament finals and thereby becoming the first person to make Punk submit. He was scheduled for a strong push, but he was then suspended for 2 months for his second violation of the company’s Wellness Policy. Regal is considered to be one of the most under rated performers in the history of the WWE, and is also thought to be one of the few wrestlers who deserved to win the World title in the WWE.
William Regal has trained a lot of wrestlers, such as CM Punk and Daniel Bryan! Regal was then sent to the WWE’s developmental territory NXT to train the young superstars, and he also serves as the color commentator. Regal is a legend among the fans in the United Kingdom for his work ethic and his services to the wrestling industry. Very few fans understand how good Regal is, and his technical expertise earns him the number 9 spot in our list of 15 greatest technical wrestlers in the history of the WWE.
